Placenta previa

Yep found out at 20 weeks that placenta was covering cervix but it had moved by 28 weeks and now it’s nice and high so there is hope x good luck for better news at your follow up scan 🤞🤞

Hi Bethany, I haven’t got placenta previa but mine is still low lying and only 10mm away from my cervix. I’ve had scans to check its position at 28 weeks and 32 weeks and it’s not moved at all. They’ll check again at 36 weeks but if it’s not moved at all, we’ll have to book another csection. I’ve been told that there is a better chance of it moving if you have an anterior placenta which isn’t my case. But a friend of ours had placenta previa and hers had moved completely by 32 weeks, in fact I’m sure the stat is that 9/10 of them do end up moving so there’s a lot to be hopeful about!

@Lauren ah thats amazing, I'm hoping for the same news 🤞. Do you remember how much was covering the cervix and was it anterior or posterior? I have heard anterior ones move more than posterior which makes me anxious 🤣

@Jessica mine is also posterior and covering the cervix so I'm really anxious it won't budge... did your friend have an anterior or posterior placenta?

Hopefully yours does a last minute move as the uterus grows in those final weeks 🤞🤞

My friends was posterior and she had quite a big baby, so not sure if her uterus moved more to accommodate a larger baby too?

Thanks lovely, and yours too. I’m losing hope now because I’m 35 weeks tomorrow and we’ve not seen even 1mm of movement but miracles do happen. I see the consultant in 12 days for a final plan of action 🤞🏼

@Jessica I wonder if the uterus does enlarge any more when the baby is bigger? My baby is 13th centile 😭🤣.

Mine moved by 32 week scan and confirmed at 34 week scan. My midwife and consultant were both very unbothered by it and said it would probably move as most do. Good luck 🤞🏼

I think that was their train of thought, their baby was 91st centile for most of pregnancy. My baby is bang on the 50th centile so we’ll see. Will definitely let you know what the outcome is, but I’ve made peace with the idea of another csection if it’s safest for us both. Update me when you have your scan! ❤️

I had a scan at 34 weeks (last week) and they said it had moved! I had a posterior covering the cervix and attached to the back. The sonographer said it’s very unlikely for it to stay in the original place and as the baby grows and stretches up it should naturally move with baby x

mine moved up by my 32 week scan.

Good luck with yours. I was honestly so dismissive when people said 9/10 do and thought it was just to try and relax me but it fortunately did.

@Sophie that's great news! Everyone replying here has been really reassuring. Whenever I speak to people about it, they refer to just low lying which pretty much 100% of the time moves (especially if anterior). I haven't spoken to many who have had an actual previa which covers the cervix but seeing so many people here saying their previa did move is nice to see xx

@Charlene ahh that's great news, you must be very pleased! Sounds similar to mine - I was told the end of my placenta is covering the cervix so I suppose it doesn't have much to move 🤞

@M.E I hate how previa is lumped under the umbrella term of "low lying" when a low lying placenta is actually more likely to move than one that actually covers the cervix. I keep thinking well this "9/10 move" statistic doesn't reassure me because I bet most of those cases are just low lying and you're more likely to be the 1/10 if yours is covering the cervix. I really hope mine moves too! It's so hard to not worry xxx

I’m waiting for my 33 week scan to see if it’s moved 🤞🏻 mine is anterior and was covering the cervix by 2cm. No idea if it’s moved yet or not but my baby is transverse at 31 weeks. I’m the same as you that I dismissed the 9/10 move etc because I knew mine was actually covering but will wait and see. The one bit that’s really annoying me is the not knowing, I don’t want to wait until 36 weeks to be deciding what’s going to happen xx

Question to everyone who has had a section or one planned because of their placenta, when did you make the call to have the section? And what week will you be/were you? xx

@Hannah I have heard anterior ones are more likely to move as the front of the uterus expands more than the back so more likely to pull placenta away from the cervix. So fingers crossed yours moves. Is a transverse baby associated with placenta previa? I suppose you've still got time for baby to move. Pregnancy is just full of worry and uncertainty isn't it! I feel the same about the waiting until 36 weeks to know what the plan is xx

I’m with you on that, week 36 feels so late to be making a plan. I spoke to the doctor after my 32 week scan to check it’s presentation and she said they would want to book a csection for week 39 but no later than 39+4 apparently and the date would be decided when I see the doctor and consultant at 36+5 (2 days after the scan). She said they’d want to give it an opportunity to move as late as possible but if I were to go in to labour between now and then, I’d go to triage and have a csection done there and then.

I haven’t heard that anterior placentas are more likely to move so that’s interesting. I’ve always had quite strong baby movements at the front of my belly so I’ve assumed that my placenta is still very low. Yes transverse and breech positions are more associated with placenta previa and the baby can’t get their head down, however it’s also not uncommon for the baby to not be head down until 32-34 weeks xx

@Hannah I had no clue either until I joined a Facebook placenta previa group and lots of people on there were saying this. I then listened to a podcast about previa and they were talking about a study where they found anterior previa and low lying placenta moved more often than posterior. I found the study I think they were referring to if you fancied a read. I've been researching this stuff like crazy haha.

I had an anterior placenta with my first baby and I still felt movement at the front of my stomach. I suppose you won't know until you have that scan.

it does feel so late doesn’t it! I want to know what kind of birth I’m most likely to have. This is really helpful thank you as one of the things I was worried about was I didn’t want to have section earlier than 38/9 weeks but everything I read seem to suggest that ladies were being pushed for sections at 37 weeks xx

They talk about a lot of irrelevant stuff in this podcast, I think around the 45 minute mark they start talking about it. They do talk more about low lying placenta rather than previa but they do mention it x
