I just really don't know if this is normal. My 10 month old usually has one or two wake ups during the night and immediately starts crying like this. It is horrible. He screams so much he goes hoarse and loses his voice. I can't settle him without putting him on boob but my partner can rock him back to sleep after 5 or 10 minutes of this screaming. Is this crying normal? And any suggestions to help calm him would be great.

Are they teething? My son did this for quite a while leading up to his first birthday from teething

Everyone knows their own baby's cry best, but to me, it sounds like he is in pain. Teething could be an issue, or perhaps gas/poop.
Also, do not feel bad about giving him boob in the night.
It could also be that he is actually awake a little before this and builds up to a scream quite quickly, but you don't wake until he is screaming. If so, that might be why it is so difficult to calm him.

My girl has done this on and off since she was born, she's almost 11 months and wakes up screeeaming sometimes. People seem to think she is having night terrors? If its night terrors I researched that its best not to wake them up, not pick them up immediately but to let them either wake themselves properly and reorientate themselves to where they are (because it can be disorientating like for adults) or settle back to sleep. Both has happened with my girl, she could scream for a few minutes and if I don't touch her she doesn't fully wake up and goes back to sleep, or she fully wakes up and when she realises where she is and that I'm next to her she just stops. Could also be growing pains or teething as people have said.
I'm not sure. He just had two teeth break through a couple weeks ago and I can't see any new ones but I also can never get a very good look in his mouth. Maybe I'll give me some Panadol before bed tonight and see if that does anything
I agree, it does sound like he's in pain. He did have episodes of screaming like this in the early days when his reflux was severe but I have no idea what is causing it now. Maybe, though my partner is a light sleeper and the baby still sleeps in our room. It really does seem like the screaming starts the moment he wakes up.
my mind has been going to night terrors. I just thought he was too young for them. I'll try and leave him for a bit when it happens tonight and see if he stops on his own. Thanks for that

My girl used to wake up like this from time to time it was heartbreaking
Ppl said either night terrors or teething. She handled teething well during the day so we worked on night terrors holding her trying to calm her but not wake her. She would settle after a bit but it was so heartbreaking seeing her go through this

My boy is 9 months and cries like this and our specialist has suggested it’s night terrors. She also said night terrors are more common when iron levels are low. So might be worth getting some red meat or leafy greens into the diet.
We also have allergies and there is a difference between his tummy pain cry from allergies and his night terrors.
Hope you get to the bottom of it!
