Maternity leave benefits when unemployed

Hi Momma’s! I lost my job during this pregnancy and it’s been an impossible market for job searching. I’ve decided to wait until after the baby is born to go back to work, but does anyone know if you can apply for pregnancy leave just like you would if you were working, once it’s time to deliver the baby?

I don’t understand the question.

I think she’s asking if there are pregnancy benefits she can receive after the baby is born. Similar to what you would receive if you took maternity leave through your job. Like paid income maybe? And other benefits

I’m wondering if you don’t have a job, can you apply for disability/maternity leave when you have your baby, since you aren’t really able to work. Would you technically be considered “disabled” temporarily?

I don’t think you get pregnancy leave if you don’t have your job anymore. But if you got fired you can probably collect unemployment.

What state do you live in ? You may be qualified for certain benefits

No, most jobs make you work for 1yr before you get those types of benefits. You’d just have to not work until you were ready to return full time

i was also laid off while pregnant. since you’re in CA there are benefits you still have.

i filed for unemployment benefits and was job searching while pregnant.
when i had my daughter i ended my unemployment benefits (since i was no longer searching for a job) and filed for paid family leave.

you get payment for both unemployment and paid family leave and you can kick off the process by going to edd.ca.gov

well it wouldn’t be maternity leave that goes through your employer, and since u don’t have one u wouldn’t be on maternity leave from anybody… u could possibly apply for a short term disability/temporary disability but I don’t think that’s very likely. STD is usually through the employer too - I think. And disability is usually a hassle to get approved for and can take awhile… At least to my knowledge. Idk if things may be different in your state.
The most I know of is that u could probably apply for welfare like food stamps and such.

Again, just from my own personal knowledge/experience and the state that I live in.

but if you’re not technically disabled, and ur only disability is that you’re pregnant or just had a child, I don’t think you would get approved for that.

Avatar

Oh yeah u could get unemployment. Idk how CA works, but to continue receiving unemployment u have to prove that you are still actively job searching as well

Basically if you’re looking for the government to pay u while u just sit at home pregnant or with your baby, it’s not gonna happen in the USA.

If that was possible, all the moms would be doing it 😆 I know I would!

I stopped working at 33 weeks with my twins and quit cause I knew I couldn't come back after they were born, I got no benefits, just went to my mans income.

I’m in the state of CA. I am on unemployment at this time since my position was eliminated. I’m only wondering about a short term disability once baby is about to be born/is born and shortly after since you would normally get that if you were working. Strange question I know, but not looking to just bum off the government. Simply seeking options is all.

thanks Alyssa! I know CA usually does help, but wasn’t sure where to look.

I understand. Yea idk if Cali is different but in my state, if you’re on unemployment u have to prove that you are still actively seeking work.

Hopefully you find something helpful. Good luck! 🍀
