Work have declined my flexible working application to go from 5 days (full time) to 3 days (part time) based on service needs. I don’t know what to do as I can’t afford to pay for nursery full time and as you all know, I can’t leave the job for 3 months upon my return. What can I do? 😭 I’m really stuck..

I’m so sorry you are going through this- so frustrating

I think you can appeal and/or take it to HR. Have you explored the reasons for declining

I would go to HR as they should try and sort a job share rather than deny your application without a reasonable other option...

Could you use some AL 2 days a week until you can find something else or sort out alternative childcare or a job share

Could they move you to an area that could accept it?

I’m so sorry to hear this. The exact same thing is happening to me at the moment. My manager also declined my flexible working request of reducing my days from 5 to 3. She is allowing me to compress my hours into four days. It still doesn’t help me much. Going to use annual leave to work three days a week for the first two months and then up to four. That will take me to 12 weeks and if it’s not working out, I will have to resign unfortunately. Feeling really disheartened.

HR have been useless, but my trust have just updated their flexible working policy. I can now have unlimited applications for flexible working. It is worth checking your policy as there were some changes that came into place on April 6.
