Speech delayed toddler - autism?

I really feel I’m at my wits end with all of this. My gorgeous little boy is 2 next month - he was born 2 months early due to pre eclampsia however he is still not talking. He has very little understanding such as if I ask him what cows say or to bring shoes he just won’t do it.

Lately I feel he’s been displaying more signs of autism but all of our concerns are being ignored by our wonderful but quite frankly useless GP/HV. They are great at making suggestions but very little help in monitoring or supporting our family.

My son shows the following traits

Little understanding
No words
Pacing
Rarely does pretend play
Makes a lot of eeee mmmm aaaa sounds

I just don’t know how to support him, if this even is autism or something else and it’s just incredibly difficult because we are getting support from no where.

Unfortunately at that age it is a waiting game. I would raise it again at his two year check. I would ask for a hearing test at that stage as well. Does he go to a nursery type setting and if he does have they raised concerns? Speech therapy they do t worry about until the child turns 3 and even then you have long waiting lists. A referral for autism can take two years. Ask if there is any makaton courses. Ask if there is anything locally that might help. We had a charter matters class at the local children’s centre and drop in speech therapists. Look online at the SALT website and see if there’s any activities you can do at home. Practise exercising his mouth muscles ie blowing bubbles.

My little girl is 2 next month and exactly the same xx

He has had his hearing test which came back clear although the test was a sound being played next to a flashing animal so not sure how accurate it is! I have messaged our HV again to see if they could even see him as we haven’t had a HV see him since his 1 year check up which is quite concerning to us. I will look into supports in the local area - thank you!

He does go to nursery and they have not raised concerns they have just advised he could be taking his time

If you think it’s autism you have to push and push it’s sad you have to do that but you do. Me and my sons dad knew our boy was autistic from 18 months they didn’t want to listen at first but we didn’t give up! We’re currently in the middle of a diagnosis now and he’s 27 months

Does he have an iep at nursery? Some areas are a little different but mine had to have a terms worth of evidence regarding speech before nursery could make that referral. They also worked on her speech.
My oldest who has autism the nursery had someone from early years to see him in his nursery setting although it wasn’t until he started school nursery they mentioned autism. I just thought he had speech delay.

My little boy was talking and doing really well woth everything. When he was 2.5 he had a regression, he now no longer speaks stall, jas very little understanding of anything, he's 4 and is still in nappies as he doesn't even register being wet or dirty. He eats things that are not food (he has just been diagnosed with pica disorder), he bites himself and others, he does not make eye contact well, will.jot okay with other children, does nit play with toys how you would expect, he has a hightened pain tolerance the list goes on.
About a year ago the nursery raised concerns aswell and we contacted the hv, we have been referred for every test you can think of, hearing, eyesight, full blood works, sleep clinic, speech therapy. We have been told it will be a minimum of 18 months before he gets a diagnosis.

Me daughter is the same and we are in speech therapy. Sorry I have no advice, but know you’re not alone. Feel free to pm me anytime!

If your really concerned then just keep on ringing the HV. I did that and my son got referred on the basis of how many times I raised concerns ( literally what the HV told me) my son was referred to the paediatrician by 18 months x

I would say if you have suspicions then push for referrals - the waiting lists are so long. If it so happens that you don’t need the referrals anymore, you can always come off of the waiting lists. I had suspicions when my son was a year old, pushed for referrals at 16 months and we are still waiting to be seen over a year later. Ultimately you know your own child best and can advocate best for them. Unfortunately we are often fobbed off as parents and early intervention is so helpful in supporting our little ones the best! HV’s need pushing, just keep badgering until you are taken seriously!

Both my kids are most likely on the spectrum so i feel for you mama. Message me anytime

My oldest is autistic, even if he is and he stays non verbal, talk to him lots, describe everything, be expressive. They may not notice til school age.

Thanks so much for all the comments. I spoke to the HV yesterday and she refused to give us an appointment to see him ( he’s not been seen by a HV since 13 months all the concerns are raised over phone call ) - so I have called my GP and got an appointment for 2 weeks time. It’s just awful trying to get someone to listen! I’m waiting for a SALT to call me back as I am going to go private because I fear the longer we wait with HV and NHS and everything - the more trouble we are going to run into😞 he’s a lovely little boy so sociable and cheeky but you can just see the frustration in him that he just can’t get the words out or communicate his needs to us 😞

Does he respond to his name? Does he show interest in talking to people and playing with others?

Avatar

yeah he does respond to his name and he tries to sign to us, he loves other kids and is always smiley when he sees them, he will hand us toys to play with him and he will take turns with us when playing with his cars

Hi I am a Niku Mum. My son was born at 29 weeks. He was supported via machines high flow low flow. CPAP spinal attack name my poor little baby went through it so I can totally relate to your experience of having your baby early. I had preamps and Nearly lost my son if I didn't have a C-section when I did my son also has Speech delay? He's four years 10 months old now and he's only just started to say a few words he can't string sentences and sadly he's kind peers have noticed that he doesn't talk and ask me why my son doesn't talk and I feel totally gutted for him that it's so evident that he can't speak like the rest of hisschoolmates and makes me wonder whether I should actually be sending him to school next year. We are putting him into a special autistic school so that he will enjoy school and he'll be supported with other autistic children. Mainstream school is something I'm not confident in putting him in because they don't have the understanding of autism

Did you know this was a thing?

Didn’t know this existed! I’m actually not breastfeeding 2nd time round (though wish I did) after a bad experience with my 1st baby. But this is something I 100% needed 1st time round.

Screeching baby

I have twin boys, 5months.

One is very quiet

The other... is like a pterodactyl who screeches when bored, tired, hungry, as soon as he wake up to be held etc...
This habit has only just started!

Has anyone else experienced this and how long did it last?
So far it has been about 5 days 😭😭😭😭

Circumcision, please help

I know it can be a really sensitive topic, but I feel really underinformed about whether I should choose to circumcise or not if we end up having a boy.
For context: we are very non-religious, but I worry about the stigma of being non-circumcised when he would start to get interested in dating, navigating cleaning it and the risk of infection especially as he gets older and navigating potty training at daycare and stuff. I also worry about the increased risk of penile cancer. But then I also hate the thought of making my baby go through a major surgery unnecessarily and would prefer for them to make the choice when they are older if they choose to get circumcised.

How did you make your choice? Does anyone regret their choice?

What would you do?

Our house is up for sale for 5 months, but hasn’t sold yet and we’re due our second baby in June. We have just reduced the price, can’t reduce down any lower without loosing money.

We live in a beautiful 2 bed house that we’re very comfortable in but just want the kids to have their own room.

Option A) leave it on the market with the hope it sells. Potentially could mean moving with a newborn and a toddler but then the kids shouldn’t have to share a room and once we’ve moved we’ll be settled for 10+ years

Option B) take it off the market, gives us time to nest/get ready for our daughters arrival and adapt as a family of 4. Kids can share a room once she is 6 months old (oldest will be 2 years) as the second bedroom is a large double. Get a conservatory which will create more space downstairs as we can move the dining room table. Relist the property approx January 2027 then hopefully find our next long term home afterwards
