I haven't been in that position myself but you can get a lot of items cheaply on FB Marketplace. A lot of people give stuff away on local groups too.
It doesn't have to be super expensive

I second the comment above- marketplace and charity shops are amazing. My 4 year old calls the charity shop a toy shop. There were many hand me downs we had that we hardly used. You really don't need as much as shops would like you to believe!

I don’t know if you’ll have it where you’re from but look into a sure start grant, we have it here where for your first baby you get some money to help with costs x

Avatar

You also can check regularly in Vinted, there can get really good deals for baby clothes. 😉😉😉😉

I don't have money issues (yet...thankfully!) HOWEVER I barely ever buy new anything for my two! Children don't need huge amounts and you can get great clothes and toys from charity shops and now Vinted for specific items you need. Save where you can, if you can for once baby is here and give breastfeeding a good shot for free milk 🤣
Look into grant and any benefits you are entitled to

There are also fb mums groups where you can get items for free from other mums. I gave away my sins old pushchair like that for example.

Vinted and marketplace will be your best friend x

Thank you ladies I’m new to the Lincoln area and I lost my job before Christmas so getting back into a new job has been hard hopefully I don’t fuck up as a mum 😞

Me and my partner have just been having a meltdown over money struggles 😭 our baby’s due any day now and our landlords suddenly told us he’s putting our rent up and we either have to sign up to stay in this tiny one bed flat that’s too small for a family for another year at higher rent or leave within a month 🙃 so we’re asking friends and family for help basically but looking like we will be bringing our baby up from my partners mums spare room for the beginning of babys life because even if we pay the higher rent we can’t stay in this flat another year it’ll be too small once the baby is bigger 🥲 so lovely timing to have to up and leave our home and everything I’ve got used to 🥲 just feel like crying tbh every time things start to feel a bit under control something else gets pulled out from under us it’s exhausting but I’m aware we’re luckier than most we do have our families to fall back on thank god

I know but my anxiety just wants everything to be perfect xx

Avatar

I was the same needed everything perfect and organised trust me it all goes out the window when baby comes! We had some nice stuff gifted to us and to be honest we have never used them 😂 most of her clothes we got given rather than buying new and I got big things in January sales 😂 if you give me a message I’m sure I have some things you could use xx

I was set to have a decent pot of money saved for maternity when we decided to have a baby. Since being pregnant, our roof caved in and our car died and we have had to borrow £27k. Any savings we had planned on having and using for the baby went straight onto paying back those we’d borrowed from.

It really made me realise though you do not need to spend money to get everything you need for a baby. Charity shops and nearly new baby sales will be your best friends, you can get brand new outfits for pence if you look hard enough. FB market place has been great, we’ve managed to get furniture for free or really low prices. And again as above comments vinted is fabulous for things.

I would also say, only buy what you need rather than what you want. Most of the things on the baby lists are modern additions and not necessary.

My final suggestion would be to not find out the gender of the baby so you don’t go over the top with buying cute outfits as you are limited with choice

I resent ever having to buy new clothes for my boy after buying bundles on marketplace! You get so much for so little!

I also wanted add, you can have baby shower and then you can make lists what kind of things you need, then people will give you what you need as well 😉😉😉😉

I did not have a job when I found out that I was pregnant. I was 19 and living on a mattress on my in-laws floor, so was my partner. He was an apprentice and was just starting out as a personal trainer, so he didn’t have much money either. I was in a lot of debt as I had just dropped out of university. I quickly found a job and we became stable, but then Covid hit. I managed to make it work. I was entitled to some benefits and furlough pay from my workplace. I wasn’t entitled to maternity leave, I only got maternity allowance from the government as I hadn’t worked long enough at my office. Children aren’t expensive if you don’t allow them to be. We bought a new mattress and a minimal amount of clothing, and took help from family to get clothing and a pushchair. We got the cot, drawers, books and nursery bits second-hand, but my advice is to not buy any of this yet. I spent what I did have on the nursery, and he never used it as we couldn’t keep our home. Not only that, they don’t use

it for a while. Get a next-to-me crib second hand and buy a new mattress. Figure out the one or two things you’d love to get new, and buy those. I was desperate for a new pushchair but we couldn’t afford it. Don’t overbuy clothing because they wear newborn clothes for a maximum of two weeks. Then you can skip 0-1 in most cases and go straight to 0-3 months & roll the sleeves slightly. This is what we did. We used Facebook marketplace for everything. I applied for the surestart grant of £500 and got it. Child benefit is £104 a month, which you will get, and you might be entitled to a healthy start card. Use the entitled to site to see what you can get once your child is here. If you’re entitled to benefits you get an extra £200-300 a month for your child. You’ll make it work, I promise! Message me if you want to chat x

Congratulations! 💖
I think its very common, you’re not alone. I know its easy to be anxious because theres so many unknowns with being pregnant and having your first baby but have trust that everything will work itself out with getting all the baby gear.

If you want something new eg a good buggy or a specific cot and i would suggest letting people know so they can help put money towards it instead of getting clothes for example.

Also you have 9 months to use looking at gumtree or fb marketplace, and theres always people giving away things for free and/or very cheap. And if things get more difficult theres ‘baby banks’ that function like food banks and they will always be there to help xx

Hello, throughout my pregnancy I was never in this position however I still used charity shops and market places. Also Vinted was and still is a godsend! We also had a baby shower which was the best thing we ever did as it was also a big help.

However I am currently struggling with money as there has been an issue with my maternity and I have not yet received a single penny since starting maternity nearly 2 months ago, so I completely understand how you feel. Xxx
