19 weeks pregnant and I've already gained 30lbs

It's my first baby. I walk everyday and I eat around 3000 calories daily. I admit I could make better dietary choices, but has anyone else gone through this? Please give me tips on how to slow the weight gain. I'm very scared.

Be active nothing to major go for walks. Aim for high protein meals with carbs and healthy fats. Good sources of protein. Don’t be obsessed with your weight just try and make healthy choices to avoid gestational diabetes or other health risks. Weight gain during pregnancy is normal be kind to yourself. I gained most of my weight during after the baby was born.

This is me. I gained weight so quickly in the beginning. I’ve been able to slow it down somewhat in my second trimester by drinking tons of water, reducing bad carbs specifically. Not cutting out but my first trimester all I could stomach were unhealthy carbs (candy, bread, cereals, sugar). I chew gum throughout the day and when I want a snack I go for turkey meat stick and cheese, cucumbers, yogurt, melons. And I have to force myself to walk at least an hour a day. I wfh and school from home so my lifestyle is very sedentary outside of the gym. When I found out I was pregnant. The gym stopped immediately and the weight piled on

Agree with anything Jen said ☝🏼 just would note that 3000 calories daily is way too much, so you might want to reduce it a little bit. Also walking and slight exercise will be good for you and baby. I was a gym goer before and went up to 32 weeks pregnancy but I know lots of ladies that started exercising after they got pregnant!
Just healthier food, not so much calories and all good. End of the way you are carrying a baby so don’t look at the weight numbers! X

Note that during pregnancy you should only be eating about 200 calories more than your normal maintenance amount daily. Watch the calorie density of foods you eat (how many calories per oz or cup), and choose foods that have more bulk for less calories. Vegetables and fruits are of course very good for this, and have many vitamins you and baby need. So fill up on big piles of broccoli, leafy greens, melon, and strawberries which are so tasty right now! This, plus lean healthy proteins and whole grains will make you feel full. Careful with dressings and sauces that can add a ton of calories without nutrition or satiation. Also stay clear of sweets and fatty snacks like chips, baked goods and candy. And of course, lots of water!

3000 is way too much, you only need about 300 extra daily. I would add in some light pregnancy friendly work outs to go with your walking might be helpful. I would defiantly start with cutting back the calories though and you’ll probably see a signigicant difference. If you’re still feeling snacky during the day, high protein snacks will stay with you and keep you fuller longer.

Pay attention to if you’re actually really hungry when you eat. Sometimes we eat for lots of reasons like boredom, stress or sadness. If you listen to your body and eat when you’re hungry and stop when full, it will make a difference. It’s not as easy as it sounds and takes practice. But it’s possible.

Daily calorie intake should be 2,000 to 2,200
No reason to eat more unless it’s healthy

daily intake is individual, there is no single number for everyone. Bigger people need more food than small people, metabolic rate and activity level all play a role. My maintenance calories are about 1,400 (I'm only 5'2"), so during pregnancy is closer to 1,600 daily. I'm 34 weeks along and have gained about 22lbs so far.

No carbohydrates. Eat peanut butter . It will kill your hunger Ness. Peanut butter was guided to me during my pregnancy when my sugar level was high

I second this. My activity level is very low due to wfh and school from home. I have to be intentional about getting activity. My maintenance calories are around 1600 when I’m getting daily exercise and I’m 5’6. So it’s very easy to go over when you have a new found increased appetite and cravings for unhealthy foods

Some of these comments are triggering me 🥲
Please please do not cut out carbs. Not unless you have GD.
Please don’t stress about weight gain too 🫶🏼 you’re pregnant, be kind to yourself.
Make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids, water. Keep it high! Not only will it make you feel better, you’ll probably find you won’t suffer from cramps as much as others.
Prioritise protein - it’s satiating and will help you feel fuller for longer.
3000 calories MAY be too much for you, I was on 3000 calories when I fell pregnant (body builder). I trained 5 times a week and also walked 12k steps and did cardio also.
Just listen to your own body. Sometimes I’m not hungry and I’m just thirsty, by the time I’ve drank water, the hunger has gone.
But I’d speak to your midwife, listening to some of these comments are just plain stupid and if you was to cut out carbs and drop your cals drastically it’ll do more damage than go of

3000 is over kill, please reduce those calories

Hi there! I was about where you are and was stressing over it, but I just continued to work out daily and eat when I was hungry and now I am 40 lbs at about 35 weeks and am totally content with that. The vast majority of my weight gain was in the second trimester and the third my appetite has gone through periods of being really strong to being nonexistent and honestly I believe our bodies gain what it needs to support our babies! You are doing a wonderful job.

I’ve also tried to reframe my mindset around weight during pregnancy, as I’ve struggled forever with body image and disordered eating. I focus on growing a healthy baby, staying active, and eating plenty instead of nitpicking the way I look. I know it’s really hard to do and I’m not dismissing your concerns because I’ve certainly shared them with you in my own pregnancy journey, but I just want you to know all will be okay ❤️

Your body doesn’t need an extra 1,000 calories per day so all those extra calories are causing the excessive weight gain. I’m 28 weeks and kicking myself for gaining 12 pounds at this point which is the most I’ve ever gained with any of my babies.

You should only need 2000-2200 daily, so that's basically 50% more calories than you need so that would be why unless you're super active burning off 1000 calories a day babe x

Avatar

Please don't listen to the people saying you're eating to much. They don't know anything about your body or needs.
Find a maintenance calorie calculator and use your pre-pregnancy weight. Then determine an appropriate amount for you plus roughly 340 calories in 2nd trimester, 450 in 3rd trimester .
Many people would be above 2000-2200 if they actually did the math. I certainly am above that to maintain.
