Hello! I started spinning in May and became absolutely obsessed with it, but last week I found out I’m pregnant with my first baby and I’m terrified of doing too much. I’ve stopped spinning for now and just doing yoga and Pilates, also thinking about adding swimming. I have an appointment with my doctor next week so going to ask them about exercise then, but is there anyone who has continued going to spin class in their first trimester?

I did some classes the whole way through x

thanks Amelia, did you keep the same intensity as pre-pregnancy or did you take a bit easier?x

I could keep the same intensity for a bit, but I just really listened to my body. As my pregnancy went on I was of course feeling a lot more tired and heavier, so i definitely didn’t feel like I could do the same level as before x

They usually say that you can continue all normal exercise if you are fit and healthy with no risk factors. They may say to not be so intense. Lots of women still weight train when pregnant etc.
I’ve had two babies and sadly both severely high risk pregnancies and so had to stop exercise for both 😟

Your booking in appointment with the midwife will determine it. They go through family history etc. They will then advise what you can and can’t do. Congrats by the way! X

You can do what you did before pregnancy - this is why all midwives told me. I also told my fitness coaches that I was pregnant before a lesson so they would check on me every now and then. I went to a fitness class for almost 7 months constantly. I just slow down because I'm heavily pregnant but I keep going to my swimming class :)
Anyway, if you feel that you are overdoing your body will tell you, and you’ll feel some pressure or discomfort around your belly that means you need to stop what you're doing. But don't be afraid, being active during pregnancy is the best for you and your baby ❤️

It’s safe to continue what you are already doing. I did CrossFit throughout my pregnancy, I had to adapt so moves as I got bigger, but the main change was just to make sure I could talk throughout, so I did bring the intensity down a bit, so for me that meant a max heart rate of about 150-160. I did let my coach know really early that I was pregnant, that way they wouldn’t push me or expect me to do what I normally would and if I wanted to take a break, I just did x

Congrats on your pregnancy 🥰
I’m a spin instructor and was teaching up until 35 weeks pregnant (by this point my bump was hugeeee 😂) I lowered the intensity from around 30 weeks but you can continue your usual exercise whilst pregnant. I believe keeping up my fitness throughout my pregnancy really helped me 😊x

This is all really helpful, thank you everyone 🥰

I do crossfit like Mish and I'm still going, just adapting the movements so it's safe and I feel OK. I'm also only pushing when I feel good or staying in a conversational pace. Beat advise is listen to your body, it will tell you if something doesn't feel right and you need to slow down. 😊 And congrats!!

Staying active throughout pregnancy is better than not. I've been doing CrossFit since before and continued. While you've not got too much of a bump it'll be me comfortable on a bike. Just listen to your body! Your body will tell you. It really will. I was actually going to restart spin before being pregnant. The only reason I haven't done spin pregnant is because I hadn't done a class in years so don't want to do anything I'm not adjusted to! Intensity during exercise, if I push it, I don't do it for long periods. So if I know it's the end of a class, I'll push to work my heart a bit more. So it's more of a few minutes at really high intensity rather than a full class. Congratulations 🎉

I did spin to about 7 months when I got sciatica so had to stop. I had to adjust my bike positioning but your teacher will be able to show you how. I found it didn’t put too much impact on my bump or pelvic floor x

I kept up with 3 CrossFit sessions per week. I’ve just stopped at 38 weeks. They say you can continue your usual exercise throughout. Just be sensible and listen to your body. X

that's amazing Kellie! Very inspiring! I'm 15 weeks pregnant and also doing 3 crossfit sessions a week, trying to make it 4 or add a gentle run in. Have you been told you can't do lunges towards the end of your pregnancy? My coaches have been saying lunges are a no no and I'm so shocked. Even my friend who's a PT pré and post natal was surprised. X

Hi! I’m spinning instructor I kept doing spinning like fully jntil second then I was slowly pulling back whatever felt comfortable

I did lunges until about 33 weeks and I only stop because for me single leg work hurt my public bone so I prefer air squats, but my coaches never said I needed to stop them, I was just listening to my body. Also we have two pregnancy and postpartum trained coaches, and they didn’t say anything about lunges x

amazing! I did think it was a very strange thing to say. They mentioned them being too tough on the core and pelvic floor 🙄 but apparently squats weren't. Just odd. Thanks for letting me know, that's great to hear! Very impressed you could workout throughout and very inspiring. Hope it'll be the same for me xx

I suspect they have worked with someone/know someone who was told not to do them in their circumstances and they have assumed it applies to all pregnant women. So long as you keep scaling as you need to, you’ll be surprised what you can do. My burpees, went all the way to 24inch box burpees, and toe to bar became seated last pull downs, but so was still moving which was the important bit. Good luck in you pregnancy x

oh quite possibly!
That's awesome! I'm only 15 weeks so I can do burpees still (thankfully as I love them!) I just lower myself in a controlled way (triceps gains 😂) but ttbs I've stopped and even running makes me want to wee and puts quite a bit of pressure so it's not worth it. I like the seated lats pull down scaling option for ttb! Brilliant! 😊 Thank you so much! Good luck to you too! 🫶🏼

I think I dropped running and skipping about 15/16 weeks as is was playing havoc with my pelvic floor. But on the flip side I was able to use a barbell all the way through, although I did mainly go from the hang after about 26 weeks. X

that is super interesting, thanks for sharing and that makes me feel good to know others have done the same. I've stopped skipping super early on because I don't enjoy it anyway 😅 and going upside down even though I like a handstand push up but hate a wall walks.
Also good with a barbell for now, just sad I can't go heavy or don't want to push myself too much and brace too hard. 🙈 It's my favourite thing as well 😂🙈 x

Just as an update, I went to my first spin class since finding out I was pregnant this morning! And honestly, I hated every second of it 🙈🙈 I’m so sad because I love spinning so so so much, but I just felt so scared and nervous the whole time, I think personally I’m going to have to switch to a different workout for a while. But thank you all so much for your replies and your support 💖

aaahh Rach, I feel this. That must be so frustrating but you definitely need to find something that you will enjoy and feel comfortable with otherwise you'll never go or always feel deflated. I feel it with weightlifting, I want to be mindful with the weight I lift so I don't overdo it and it can be frustrating. I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy! ☺️ I guess spinning there's not much rest at all right? So that might be tough for you. I remember in my first trimester needing sooooooo much rest in between sets or reps of something. Maybe the 2nd trimester you'll find it easier to go back to spinning ☺️ xx

yea there’s hardly any rest it’s just 45 minutes of constantly going. I tried to go at a lower intensity than I normally do, but I just felt so uncomfortable the whole time! I absolutely agree, I think I’m going to go back to swimming as I used to love that!

oh yeah I remember doing my first ever spinning class for charity and it was 1h30 and I like to think I'm strong and fit but man I died. 😅 Spinning is not for me haha. Well done for loving it!
I can imagine with going up and down and your heart rate likely going up that wouldn't have felt nice at all.
Swimming sounds loooooovely 😍
