ADVICE ON SWEEP

I had 3 sweeps done from 38 weeks it didn't do anything for me but they told me it's normally offered from 39 weeks

Personal preference, I said no because I didn’t want to increase the risk of infection and used sage oil in the bath to help stimulate contractions instead and went into labour the next day! X

I had two out my 3 pregnancies, both got it started within 24 hours but I was also on the raspberry leaf tea lol

I had one and I do think it worked for me, I went into labour a few hrs later. It can also give you an idea of if you’re dilated at all which is why I wanted one x

They’re uncomfortable but not painful, and there risk is they can accidentally break your waters (rare) I had 2, 40 and 40+2 I only lost my mucus plug and wasn’t a point to have another one as they said it’s first baby and as it hadn’t worked probably won’t. You need to have a soft cervix / dilated a little I was 2cm by the second one. I see no harm the sweep to try get things going x

My first born i had a sweep but I was over due my second I was induced at 37+5 and gave birth at 37+6. The sweep with my first shower I was a good 1cm and just helped things along x

I'll be honest. If I was being offered anything because my movements had slowed. I'd be taking it. Scared or not. Inductions are not this big thing to be afraid of. Sometimes they are there for a genuine medical need and in your case it's for a medical need because slowed movements are not a good thing for baby! It means baby could be poorly and they can look after them better out than in at this point! I would get it. Don't take any chances with your baby's health and wellbeing!

I've been told by the midwife running out ante-natal clinics that the medical teams feel they have to offer you something, especially with e.g. reduced movements, even if they don't necessarily feel strongly that you should take it. Also remember you can always decline today and accept tomorrow (or next week!) as another option.

I have been offered one for Tuesday this week and I’ll be 39+3, I said yes because I want to know what my body is doing and how ready it is, they said I can go in for one every 2-3 days if the first doesn’t work but I am keeping high hopes for this one to work ☺️xx

I had a sweep at 38 weeks exactly and he was born 6-7 hours later. Was also my 2nd baby

I had three and they were horrendously painful, although lots of people do say they don't hurt, so I think it's potluck which camp you're in.
The thing is they don't really work unless you're already on your way, which, if it's your first baby, you probably aren't. And if you are already on the way, why not let nature take its course instead of messing with it? I won't be accepting any sweeps next time.

the midwife that did mine was really fed up of me coming to triage (I was in and out from 25 weeks due to bleeds, reduced movement and contractions). I wasn’t even asked if I wanted one. She just did it. The student had only asked her to come and observe her do a cervical check (something I had no qualms with). I literally felt like a cow getting preg checked. She was so unnecessarily rough and I left crying

I had 3 (1 while actually in labor) and they didn’t do a dang thing lol

I went in with suspected reduced movements at 39 weeks, after monitoring it wasnt a case of any reduced movements he was absolutely fine, and was bouncing around that much it took an hour for them to get a steady reading 😂.

But then the induction pressure begin as ‘well your full term now so we can book you in for an induction’ I declined all sweeps and any other form of induction as me and the baby were perfectly fine. And he arrived at 41+2

So its your choice, if they say all is well and your happy to let nature do its thing then say no and go back to relaxing and getting ready for the baby to make an entrance when they are ready

Dont feel forced into anything if everything is fine. They seem to want to induce everyone these days when really it should only be an option if issues were seen and they needed to get things moving!

Plus sweeps have been shown to not work unless your cervix had starting to open on its own, so may just be unnecessary discomfort if your body isnt ready

I had 3 sweeps all between 39 weeks and 40 weeks, I personally wouldn’t say that it didn’t do anything. I’d say get them anyway as it could help you (it does some and not others)
