This might be a silly question but I don’t really understand when they say preemies will catch up by the age of 2 years old. How does that happen? The other kids will keep growing as well so preemies will always be smaller and developmentally behind? Thanks

So usually by 2 they are doing everything that they should be doing unless there are actual development delays not just delays as in because of actual vs corrected age. That’s what we were told. So for example my daughter turned 1 last year in October (actual) but should have turned 1 in January this year (corrected) she didn’t start sitting up by herself until then and there were other development delays that were just because of her actual vs corrected age.
I hope that kind of helps

I could never understand this either. My son was born 12wks early and he has smashed all his milestones on time. He will be 2 in December. I personally think it comes down to the hard work parents are willing to commit in time spent with meeting the milestones. Just remember this and I have learnt this myself, a baby will roll, crawl, walk and talk when they are ready. I thought my son would never sleep through and he finally started doing this a few months ago. Attend your physio, OT and paediatrician appointments. At any stage you don't believe they are meeting there milestones start asking for help. My son had an uneventful nicu and special care stay, but on discharge the problems started once we returned home and then required a three week admission and was commenced on three medications.

Mine was born at 32 weeks. The first 6 months he was smaller than babies his age. From about his first year he started to fit in and grow as he should and developmentally aswell was hitting all his milestones and more.
He’s 2 now and taller than some 2 year olds born at their due date. So as long as they’re eating well don’t worry if they hit milestones a few months later. They do just catch up

I could be wrong but I believe by 2 years, the developmental milestones aren’t really measured by months any more so there’s more time to be considered “on track”

@Jordan this makes so much more sense!!!!
