please tell me I'm not going crazy 😭

so my partner and i are having conversations with my MIL about what she'd like to be called by our baby as she's so insistent on not being grandma etc as it makes her feel old.
she's decided she really likes Gigi which I don't like anyway but also our cat is named Jiji! ( it's pronounced the same)
I would be more willing to let her have it but I just think when baby learns to talk she's going to end up confused when the cat and her grandma have the same name - especially as we're moving to be about a 5 min walk from MIL so we'll see her all the time!
her argument is that the cat is only a cat and won't be around forever but he's only 6-7 months old, we're planning on him being around for a while yet obviously 🤦🏻‍♀️
i just feel like I'm going absolutely mad as she seems to think I'm being totally unreasonable and that I just want her to pick an 'old' name and I'm at the end of my tether. i just need someone to tell me if I'm being an idiot or if I should try to push for her to pick another name?

We say Nanny here but you could say grammar? Or Nin?

What about Nana or Nonna? Or Tata, or bibi? I’m honestly surprised she’s willing to be called the same thing as the cat. I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. I used to call my grandpa “belo” because I couldn’t say “abuelo”. 😅

she can’t have the same name as your cat. it’ll be too confusing for your child. simple as🤷🏻‍♀️

I've tried offering granny, grandma, nan, nanny, nana, grandma Claire (her name) and various things but she's really sticking to her guns and insisting on gigi because it's 'glam' 🤦🏻‍♀️ we ARE admittedly having a baby quite young so she's also young for a grandmother and I understand she probably is struggling a bit with coming to terms with that, it's just such a pain that the one name she likes happens to also be the name of the cat 🤣

What about GanGan, if she's wanting it to stay close to Grandma being GiGi.
I'd just tell her you want to raise your child using clear words / english. Always been a believer than we should speak properly even to babies if we expect them to grow up using correct words for things I.e no baby talk but that's my preference.

My sister's MIL is Lolli because she refuses to be called Grandma, Grammy, Nana, Gigi, etc because they all sound old.

So MIL and FIL are Lolli and Pop. Weird to me, but whatever floats your boat 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you are okay with this one, you can suggest it and see how she feels about it

My mom goes by Mimi (meme) I think it’s a great alternative!

My friends mum is GaGa to her little girl because she couldn’t pronounce “granny”

I can promise you the baby is going to call her whatever the baby wants to call her no matter what you try and push. I wouldn’t stress about it, it’s not worth the aggravation. My daughter couldn’t say grandma it came out as bag-da. 14 years later my daughter calls her baggy.

My mum wanted to be Mami (French) I said it was too close to mama so she’s Mima.

The other options were Nana (she said it was too close to my MIL nanny) and Nonna but as my Nonna is still alive she didn’t want that.

My LO has a GiGi but it stands for great grandma!

I would not want to have the same name as a cat in any situation! Stand your ground but most of the time they end up calling their grandparents whatever they like 🤣 my nephew calls his grandparents Grannan and Bo we have no idea where Bo came from but it’s stuck 🤣

That’s rude to assume the cat won’t live long. She might not live long too! Nobody knows. Geez. But yes, it definitely will confuse your daughter. My MIL wanted to be called Gma but my daughter just calls her grandma anyway 😂

My mom’s sister took Gigi from her so she’s now Gia. She might like that

Personally, if that's what she wishes to be called I would let her be called that. If anyone is going to get upset about the corelation down the line with the cats name, it will most likely be her lol.

I have a niece who had a hard time deciphering between my sister and I being her auntie. She got used to calling my sister Auntie Lala since her name is Shala. And everytime she would see me she knew I was also Auntie but couldn't say my name. So she would call me Auntie Lala also. She's almost three and now just being able to differentiate between me and my sister and calling me by name. It's something I had to accept, and I grew to love that it wasn't a matter of what she called me. But the fact that she was always excited to see me and know who I was that way. We just have to pick our battles unfortunately lol.
