questions to ask consultant after failed ivf cycle?

hi all. i’m hoping for some advice from people who may have been in this position before, please?

i’ve just had a failed ivf cycle (poor response to stims, uneven development of follicles, only 2 mature eggs collected, both fertilised, one transferred at day 3, other didn’t make it to day 5, day 3 embryo didn’t stick.) i was on short protocol, with stims and double trigger.

the poor response was unexpected as i have good amh and afc. i had wondered about cancelling the cycle but my consultant wanted to continue. i am preparing for my follow up with my consultant and would like to be well prepared with questions about this cycle/ how next cycle could be improved. i would really value any thoughts or suggestions anyone might have about what i could ask.

thank you in advance. x

I had a failed round first time. Similar to you with low number of embryos etc. I asked a lot of questions as to why but was met with a lot of ‘there was nothing you could have done’ which in some ways was comforting but other ways frustrating. I think just speak to them about when you can go again, is there anything you can do to prepare, we asked about costs as we were paying privately. I think that’s about it. Sending you loads of hugs and wishing for a better outcome from your next x

Hi coming from someone who has had so many that I can’t count each cycle will be different and they will try different strategies and because you had good amh and afc that is why they did a short cycle

I asked:
*In your opinion, what went wrong?
*What would you do differently next time?
*Are there any additional supplements you’d recommend?
*What are the benefits of doing a long cycle?
*How long would you recommend waiting before going again?
*Would ICSI be beneficial?

I hope this helps 🤍 I just got told that it kinda was what it was and there was no real reason it didn’t work 1st time. Although next time they’ll max out stims to try to get as many as possible. Wishing you best of luck!

I had the opposite experience that I over-responded and ended up almost abandoning the cycle because my e2 was too high (too many follicles) & high risk of ohss. Later I chose to go ahead but ended up with 2 miscarriages. I then had 2 more cycles and finally had my baby boy on the 7th transfer. My consultant told me ivf is trial in error tbh, the more observations they have from you the better they can adjust to suit your body. Obviously this isn’t something they say to you earlier on because it’s frustrating to think it may take so many rounds. But rationally, yes, this can be a long journey and I kept telling myself after each failure I was only getting closer to the end goal!

I had the same response - uneven follicle growth, 2 fertilised embryos. One fresh failed, one frozen failed. I have good amh too. I just had my second cycle. My dosage was upped and my trigger was different.

I asked about which medication/dosage would be best to try

ICSI was recommended to me to improve fertilisation rates

I also did estrogen priming to prevent uneven follicle growth.

I have three good quality frozen blastocysts from this round.

But I agree, IVF can be a very expensive and exhausting process of trial and error and no one can say or predict how the body responds in each cycle. I had so many more follicles (27) this time round compared to my first (14).

Wishing you the best of luck 🤞

I’d also ask if they freezing them first and doing a PGT test could help your odds for next time

My cousin also had a bad response but later learned they were injecting the medication incorrectly so be sure that the way you were doing it was correct.

I’m not sure how many eggs in total they saw, but also ask if they believe CoQ10 could help with better egg quality. I took it as I believe it did.

Ask if you would have a better chance if you had a cervical sweep a month or so before the next transfer.
There have been studies that show it can increase your chances.

Anyone have this happen before?

We were not trying to conceive, used protection and had sex on week 2 of my cycle (accidentally on my peak ovulation day). Week 3 we had Flu A. Week 4 my period did not come (it’s very regular). I tested and it was negative (2 different brands).
What should have been week 2 of my next cycle (now 6 weeks post last period), I had light red/ pink spotting for one day when I wiped. The following week, I tested again, still negative, but this time almost all the dye was in the negative space, which I’ve never seen happen before. The area where it shows one horizontal line for negative and a plus sign for positive, the horizontal line was super faded at the 3 minute mark, and the negative vertical line in the next window was VERY dark. Now I’m on week 8 of all this, period did not show up yesterday. Nothing in my life has changed (no additional stress, no other illness, no changes in diet or exercise, etc).

Has anyone gone through this and NOT been pregnant? I’m super nervous as we thought we were done having kids.

PS. I know I should go get a blood test, does anyone know if urgent care will do that? I’m past being convinced by a pee test.

Am I pregnant?

I lightly spotted almost 5 days ago, which is not common for me before my period.
My period was supposed to come today. I should have tested in the morning but its 5:30pm.
Is there a second line??

Is it normal to test positive still? (Wouldn't usually do one)

Not the best pic and clearer in person. Is this normal? I've not had any sex since having my LO but I've had strong cravings, sense of smell is strong and my hair still hasnt started to fall out. Im 7 weeks pp so 🤷‍♀️ I wouldnt normally bother testing but with those symptoms that I never really have its like whats going on. Cravings for something very specific too and can only get from KFC now 😩 so its annoying

Can baby mamas be friends?

My son has an older brother from his biodad. Biodad has never had contact with my son. One thing lead to another though and the other child's mother and I got in contact and are planning a meeting for the boys. Biodad has no idea any of this has happened. Biodad also hasnt had contact with the other child in about 2 years. Just thoughts, opinions, anyone been through something similar?
Edit-Thank you all! Have definitely been feeling somewhat weird about it because we never met before but now know it can be a good thing definitely helps. I can't wait for them to meet. My son has been asking for a brother and I can now happily tell him he has one. That just happens to be 13. Im sorry for yall that fight/have issues with the other baby mamas. Sadly some women rather be stuck on the men, when the kid is the one who really matters. They're the ones that end up getting hurt and missing out.
