Hi! I just gave birth 3 days ago, and on the first day when we came home from the hospital, my mother-in-law applied sunflower oil to the baby without asking me. She put it in the diaper area after changing the diaper and on the neck. I told her to use Bepanthen, but she initially said that it has a lot of chemicals. I told her that I also used Bepanthen for my daughter, and I am satisfied with it. Tonight, she said she used Bepanthen, but it got red, and she applied olive oil. She came to our house to help us, but what she is doing makes me cry. She said to read about the benefits of olive oil, but I told her that newborns are sensitive and that olive oil or sunflower oil can worsen nappy rash.

Olive oil is great for the skin but I’ve never used it in the diaper changing area. Just on face and hair. And also not that young.. I didn’t start putting anything on babys skin besides Vaseline until baby was well over 2 weeks..

I have never heard of sunflower oil being used before. Firstly, don’t let your mother in law cloud your judgement and motherly instincts! It comes from a good place but that baby is not their child..! I’ve recently had very severe nappy rash with my son to point of bleeding and even went up hospital! The best cream I’ve ever used is Zinc and Caster oil cream. It’s old fashioned but my god it does the trick! It’s hard to get in shops but Amazon you can get it quickly and easy!

No matter what, though, your baby, your choice. If she doesn't respect your boundaries or decisions, then maybe she should no longer has access to the baby, and I'd tell her that.

Put your foot down even if you feel like an asshole YOU are the ONLY advocate for your baby!! If she has a problem with it then it’s on her. Having a baby and dealing with the comedown of labour + hormones and all, is such a sensitive time and you DO NOT need or deserve that extra unnecessary stress and it is NOT OK that she is creating stress. If you really can’t say anything to her then make your partner deal with her. He needs to advocate for the both of you. If I voiced something to my partner he would fight to the death for me even against a family member. I hope you are ok mama 🫶🏽🤍

Thank you very much! I truly appreciate that you took the time to write here for me! Even though from the outside it may not seem like something very serious, it hurts to know that someone is doing something with my child without asking me first. Thank you for your understanding.❤️

Thank you very much! I appreciate that you wrote and that you understand – even if it doesn’t seem serious, it hurts to know that someone is making decisions for my child without asking me.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I hope everything will be okay now because it’s gotten red. 😭

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you reaching out and understanding – even if it might not seem serious, it’s painful to know that decisions are being made for my child without consulting me.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your message and understanding. Even if it doesn’t seem like a big issue, it’s hard knowing decisions are made for my child without my input.

Olive oil can be very rough for baby skin. Coconut oil or avocado oil , I've heard that can be amazing for baby skin .

I 100% understand!! I have family trying to push narratives on me to give my child things that I am definitely against I’m putting my foot down but I have members who literally tell me they that are going to go behind my back and do it anyways when im not around
