I finally decided to leave my extremely abusive relationship tonight. He’s very very rarely physically abusive but always mentally and emotionally abusive. Extremely abusive, I’m very scared of him and what he will do to our baby when alone with him after I leave and I don’t want my child to live in fear as I have for many years. I’m going to take him to court for custody but bc the abuse is not physical I don’t think it will stand it court but I want full custody to protect my child. Any advice. Please help me.

First off you should feel proud of yourself for making this big first step

You definitely need to seek legal representation for be able to get supervise visitations

Document and save everything incriminating. Record your interactions. File a restraining order immediately tonight or in the morning. Get a lawyer who is experienced in DV and family courts.
thank you so much. I appreciate that. I spoke to one lawyer already she said the best she could do was 50/50 bc it’s not physical abuse most the time and the little physical abuse that has happened was years ago now. But that doesnt mean he’s not violent angry or very scary also narcissistic. I live in constant fear of him. Idk what to do.

How old is your baby? I assume he’s the type to fight for custody just to hurt you?
one year why?

I would find your local domestic violence shelter women’s center any facility that advocates for victims of domestic abuse and go speak to them. Many of the organizations like that have lawyers that help the women there or know of lawyers that are familiar with cases like these. The fact that lady said it has to be physical is wild. It’s pretty widely known now that abuse and domestic violence in general is wayyyyy more complex than being beaten. Even financial abuse is very traumatic.
Congratulations mama, you’re so strong. It will all work out. Hang in there!

It is still possible to prove abuse without any physical signs. Document everything no matter how insignificant you think it is. Seek legal help because you will need it. So proud of you for taking this step. You’ve already proven to yourself you can do this and tackle this surmounting and suffocating situation simply by leaving. Stay strong.
thank you very much I will make some phone calls Tomorrow. I appreciate the advice
oh yes he said he will fight for custody literally so he looks good to his mom. Like what? He’s 33. Like what
also worried bc he has a very very good job. Has his masters ect. He looks so good on paper.
I’ve been documenting some things but really not much, I feel I have a terrible memory too I truly think it’s bc of the trauma he’s put me through. You would be shocked at what I could tell you he has done. So hopefully it’s enough in court I’m so scared.

You said MOST of the time and very RARELY. that to me says that there IS physical abuse? Id contact the local cosmetic abuse advocates and get help there! Good luck mama and be so proud of yourself!
yes there has only been physical abuse on one instance and it was 9 years ago now. I’m afraid no one will help me bc every time I try to talk to someone they say bc it’s not physical abuse there’s nothing they can do 😢

Shouldn't matter. Legal aide will help you and domestic violence advocacy. Please reach out and keep you and your baby safe!
