Formula fed babies...how many oz/ml?

My baby is 4 weeks today and is having 4oz. Sometimes after she's giving hunger cues for more so we give an extra oz. However after this she seems uncomfortable and wakes up very refluxy and to spit up. I suspect she wants the extra oz to actually suck/soothe herself to sleep (as we haven't given a dummy yet). How many oz is everyone giving their baby and anyone got similar problem?

She is just unsettled as sometimes I loose count of the oz I’ve given her

My baby is 2 weeks old and is on 4oz, do you keep her upright for a while after feeding? X

Avatar

Yeah we tried 5oz defo gave bad belly. I think it’s best to give less more often x

Avatar

We do paced feeding and keep her upright, the only thing I can think of is the extra oz is a comfort feed rather than hunger. Is it worth trying a dummy?

Avatar

Mines 3 weeks and is the same. She sometimes goes from 4oz to 5oz so quite hard to judge sometimes! X

My midwife recommended trying to consistently feed every 3 hours to get an extra feed in, rather than go up anymore mls in a sitting to avoid bloating/trapped wind!

Not sure if this makes sense, but instead of us doing 100ml for 6 feeds (every 4hours) which means baby gets 600ml total, we do 90ml for 8 feeds (every 3 hours) which means baby gets 720ml total for the day!

We offer our 4 week old 5oz every 3-4 hours, sometimes he has 3oz, sometimes he drinks the whole thing.
We do keep him upright after for at least 20 mins after.
We do have a dummy too & this seems to settle him because I think like you he we doing it to soothe himself x

was planning on doing this too with every feed but I don’t know if I’ll end up wasting the formula if she doesn’t finish everything , it just gives me headache 😂😂😂

Avatar

ha yeah it can be a bit of a waste but I just find it easier in the beginning whilst they are finding their way.
I prefer that then having to use another bottle to offer more like an hour or so after because they need topping up x

Makes sense

Mine wakes up 2-3 hours is it normal ??

Avatar

in the night or in general?
We usually offer every 3 hours in the day and then last night I fed at 10:30 and he woke up at 3am for a bottle then again at 6.
Do you write down the oz when you feed? I did that with my first which helped keep track, I’m not so good this time lol x

Avatar

Yesterday she slept on and off 2 hours about twice
And throughout the night too
She slept at 10 and woke up at 12ish am
And didn’t sleep till 3 and woke up at 5ish
And from 5ish till 7:21
I was exhausted

Avatar

trust me I try to keep track of her dosage but it gets tiring
So now I just do 120ml and then after burping and changing her nappy she wakes up and is giving hunger cues so I give her another 60
Sometimes she finishes all the top up and I’m required to do another 30ml for comfort feed for her to fall asleep or she sometimes don’t finish the 60ml and 30ml out of that goes to waste and I really get angry 😒

Avatar

Cos clearly she can finish it and sleep for longer

Avatar

But she just sleeps and reviving her just doesn’t work so I just hold her upright and burp her and put her down

Avatar

@Valerie your baby sounds exactly like mine

2.5 weeks - started hitting 3oz last 24 hours but we have also seen a bit of an impact - more fussy, seems to struggle with wind and poop… so maybe is over eating as she is still tiny (around 6.4lbs now). Give the dummy a go if you aren’t against them

Avatar

My 5 week old has 6oz every 4 hours apart from at night where he will go 6-7 hours without feeding

Avatar

My baby is 4 weeks and takes 4oz then if she’s still hungry I make up an extra 2oz we are using the dr browns bottles as baby likes to guzzle so the bottles work slower so there’s isn’t as much to wind her x

Avatar

lucky you wish my little one could sleep for that long

Can someone pls help i keep making this post and nobody is responding

My boyfriend booked a trip for us to go to mexico for a week as my push present. I have severe anxiety leaving my 7 month old with my mom. I know she will be in good hands but she’s exclusively breast fed for the most part but accepts bottles just fine. i have all my pumping parts packed and will pump when baby normally eats but i don’t want baby to forget me or have latch issues when i return!! any mommas ever experience this?

Postpartum

I’m only 3 days postpartum (FTM) and already have extremely bad anxiety. I’m crying every night, as I think of another night of no sleep. My baby will not settle in his cot, he cries every moment we put him down unless in his chair rocker. So me and my partner are having to alternate after 3/4 hours of being awake with him downstairs. I’m trying everything to get him to settle. It’s a load of overwhelming stress. I’m 23, I was desperate for a baby and now I have one and feel completely useless. I miss it just being me and my partner.

When does it get better?

I was crying on the phone with the perinatal mental health team today and the lovely lady, bless her, kept assuring me that it gets better. I kept telling her I hope so because people have been saying that since having my LO and it just feels like it keeps getting worse. She assured me it gets better....

Night time routine

Heya, my 3 week old daughter is currently exclusively breastfed and I’m not pumping. Can anyone recommend the best way to share the load with my partner? At the moment I’m doing all the feeds/burbs/settling and my partner is sleeping through which obviously isn’t sustainable, I’m trying to work out the best way to get him involved. Any advice very much appreciated!

Rapid cool/ hot shot method

Sorry if this sound stupid but how are we doing the hot shot method?
Are we boiling the kettle and letting it cool a little before adding to hot flask? Then with the cool water do you boil the kettle and leave it to cool right down before putting into another flask?
My baby brain is fried trying to work out the easiest way!

Rant/WWYD

My sister (youngest, 24) has two kids, 4 & 1, and i (oldest, 30) just have my one who’s 6mo old right now, so i ask her for advice or call her to vent about things sometimes. Well im tired of her turning around and telling my other family members that I’m “losing my sh*t.” Literally have not lost my sh*t nor have i ever freaked out to her about my baby, i just call her to talk and tell her what stage my baby is in or talk through how im feeling, but she chooses to tell people that im like a complete nutcase or something which worries me that my family is going to start being judgmental about me as a mother or looking at me funny like I’m some fragile ticking time bomb.

What would you do in this situation? I’m already pretty much decided that I’ll stop telling her anything about my struggles, but I’m almost at the point where i feel like it should be confronted because she, of all people, should understand what I’m going through.
