How popular is Theodore?

I'm originally from Germany, my husband is Romanian. I really want a name that works in all of our countries and our favourite so far is Theodore. But after looking it up I realised it's massively popular in the UK and that has taken me back a bit. I've got two older kids and in their school I have never heard of a Theodore or Theo and I also have heard that nowadays popular names aren't as common as they used to be, because way more names are being used than a few decades ago.

Should I just go with the choice that we like, that also works in all of our languages we speak at home and with our families? How many Theodore's do you know in your circles, is it really that super common?

I know 2. If you like it use it 😊I know people who were one of many Adam’s or Josh’s in their year and it wasn’t an issue.

It’s such a nice name it’s on our shortlist too- but it’s very popular in the UK, yes. High chance of having one or two more in their class at school. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it!

My younger cousin (age 14) has a group of seven friends and three are named Theo šŸ˜‚ It’s the new Harry! And the name has become more popular since then…

I know 6, 5 are younger than 10 and the other is 30

My partner who is Polish son is called Theodore. (He stays in Poland still) I’m in the UK and I’ve never heard or known anyone called Theodore other than his kid. I’ve heard more Theo’s rather than Theodore.

It’s a nice name, use it 😃

Avatar

i think depends where in the UK you are depends how popular the name is. I personally don’t know anyone in the UK where I’m from called Theodore. I know of a few Theo’s but that’s their proper name Theo not a nick name or short from Theodore if that makes sense

Avatar

Fairly popular at the moment I’d say. As a teacher, I taught two Theos in the same Reception class - only one was full named Theodore though. We did have a few children coming through the younger years called Theodore too. It is such a lovely name!

Avatar

Theo is very popular but a lovely name x

Avatar

I think it may be more common in the south of the UK than elsewhere.

My boy is Theodore, but we call him Teddy. I’m from Romania too. I know it’s a popular name here in UK. The only Theodore I met is my baby’s GP. We like the name so we decided to use it regardless of how popular statistics say it is

Avatar

I love the name it's on my list too. I only know one Theo, no Theodore

After two miscarriages, we decided on the name Theo (short for Theodore), that means God’s gift.

So go ahead use it! šŸ’•

Very popular. I am Greek and chose Theodoros for my Greek roots but he goes by Theo as well. We know at least another 3 Theo’s including one in our own NCT group šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø but if you like it, go for it. My husband regrets it being so common but I’ve told him to get over it šŸ˜‚

Avatar

We have a Theodore, but goes by Theo. I haven’t met another Theodore (or Theo) yet. We absolutely love it obviously, so if you do then use it!

I live in North London, in the borough Barnet. The school that my kids to is very international, there are kids - and names - from all over the world, so I'm hoping that when the little one ends up going to the same school, it will still be a similar experience of common names not being as common. I just wonder if later in life, when he's not in school anymore but in different circles, he's going to be one among many, and does that even matter then? I'm probably overthinking this šŸ˜…

Avatar

I've also seen that Theo is even more common, so I'm hoping that if I go with the full form - which I prefer anyway - it'll make it a bit less of a possibility of him having a few others with the same name. We'll also probably give him the nickname Teddy rather than Theo.

I'm unfortunately in the South of England. Well, not unfortunately in general, just in this case haha

It’s very very popular, a lot of Teddys are Theodore’s and it’s so, so popular. I would imagine it’s in the top ten at least if not top five here and I’m south east uk. I went to school with four people called Jo, people have popular names and it’s fine!

Avatar

I've heard of loads of Theo's from working in nurseries
About 5 years ago it was super popular

Avatar

@Emmo it's very popular in the North East of England too

Avatar

My son is Theodore. He's 17years old and when we named him everyone questioned why Theodore as it was so old fashioned . Now theirs quite a few below age of 5years but most nanes become popular then they stop etc go with what you like x

Avatar

We have a Theodore/Theo. It wasn’t popular in 2021 when we’d named him. I knew one other Theo who happened to be my maternity cover at work but never any others. At his nursery there are 3 others but they go by Teddy or Theo. I don’t know any others personally but I have heard it’s popular x

Avatar

omg I don't think I've ever seen another Lianne. I'm in the US. Hi!

Avatar

I know three Theos/Theodores and a couple of Teddy’s. If you like the name, it shouldn’t really matter how popular it is.

Avatar

Theo is really common but despite that we are considering Theo. Who cares if it's popular. If you like the name go for it

The official lists for England and Wales for 2023 just came out and Theodore ranked 8th not sure if this helps

Avatar

We had on our list as we love it but two acquaintances had Theo’s in the space of 2 weeks last month so we had to veto it 🫣

Avatar

We have Theodore he goes by Theo. My cousin also named her son Theo. My son was born in 2020 and her son in 2022

What about Thaddeus? Tad, Thaddy

Scan needed at 33 weeks

Hi ladies! I just had a midwife appointment (I am 33+5)..the midwife was different to my usual midwife. She's requested I have a scan within 72 hours as she said baby is measuring a little small, however, she did say that it's likely nothing to worry about and it's probably just her measuring me a bit different to my usual midwife. Has anyone else had this? Am a bit worried although babys heartbeat and movements are completely fine.

Finding out gender

Has anyone found out the gender at a private scan at 14 weeks? And has this been accurate?

I found out at 17 with my first but I know a scan place that offers from 14/15 weeks and I’m impatient šŸ˜‚šŸ„²

Rolling milestone at 5 months - What’s typical ?

Good morning ladies,

My daughter will be 5 months old tomorrow, but there’s still no sign of her rolling. She does tummy time and loves lying on her mat, playing with hanging toys above her and to the sides, but she only lifts her legs and doesn’t seem interested in rolling or moving sideways yet.

Anyone else the same or have your babies already learnt how to roll yet ?

Thank you
