I need help!!!!! My T1 keeps twirling her hair to the point her fingers get caught and I have to cut the knots out. I can’t bear the thought of her losing her hair. It’s taken almost 2 years for her hair to grow the length it is today (it’s still very short). Her hair is really dry and curly and it just looks like a big frizz ball. Every time I tell her off she goes in a tantrum and ultimately just pulls her hair out. HV is aware and was told to distract her but that’s impossible
Picture to show how much hair I’m having to cut off 😭 and yes I have tried brushing it out and it’s impossible.
Please I need help

Can you take her shopping for a fidget spinner that she could keep her hands occupied with?

that’s a good idea. Even thought about getting a doll with hair she can play with. But I think she’s too young to understand and isn’t easily distracted

Have you looked into why she’s twirling her hair so much to this point, like possibly looking for stressors? Hair twirling is a very common self-soothing mechanism for stress, boredom, and anxiety. With it being so much to the point of her finger getting stuck and knotting to the point of needing to cut it, I’m not sure boredom is the answer to why she’s twirling to this extent.
Fidget toy is a good idea, do you use any sort of conditioner? I know the Honest brand has a great leave-in conditioner you can put into their hair dry or wet.
To add just in case as some people genuinely just don’t know: when brushing, brush from the bottom up, this reduces breakage and creating more knots (like it would if you’d be brushing from the top to the bottom). And if you have already tried, I’d use a detangling pick first (with conditioner) instead of a brush to combat the tangles and then once you’ve gotten a lot of the tangles out with the pick, then go over it with a brush.

she twirls it all hours of the day. But mostly when she is frustrated, tantruming, getting her nappy done, eating food, milk bottle, teeth brushed. We use a leave in conditioner spray bottle after bath time when her hair is wet. Her hair isn’t even long enough to brush that’s the thing it’s still so short. HV has said we need to keep an eye on it and no diagnosis will be thought about until she is 5
