Are passive suction pumps effective at increasing supply?

Eg the Haakaa suction pump / boon trove collector pump / elvie curve

Do these increase supply?

Why are you wanting to increase supply?

i asked cos some people presume they aren't making enough and then end up with an oversupply and engorgement which increases the chance of mastitis and blocked ducts so can cause harm.

undersupply is definitely possible and it's nice to see people defending others.

The way to know is if baby is gaining weight and having wet nappies you are producing enough.

I breastfed for 2.5 years and can count the amount of times I pumped on one hand (that was when I went back to work) but did use a haakaa/collector in the early days.

I think some people say that cos a lot of the time people assume they aren't producing enough so introduce formula either alongside or instead of which actually impacts supply further.

I found them helpful in the early days cos my daughter was establishing my supply so the letdown on the other side was a lot to waste.

As she got older there wasn't as much in there cos I balanced and just produced what she needed.

If they get used to a bottle to fill them that will mean they don't try as long so your body will stop producing for that feed as it's supply and demand. Getting milk from a bottle is easier/less effort for them plus is harder to digest so fills them up for longer.

Do you feed on a schedule or on demand?

Best way to increase supply is to latch baby often plus skin to skin as it releases oxytocin and tells your body it needs to produce more. Much more than any collector or pump would do.

Thanks for replying, the reason is my partner is giving baby my milk in the evening and morning so I can get some sleep. But it’s not quite enough at the moment. We are also still below birth weight at 2 weeks 4 days old so it’s playing on my mind that maybe I’m not making enough for her ☹️

I am using the boom trove collector pump thing which is convenient so I am reluctant to get anything more fancy complicated or expensive if I don’t have to! Maybe I will just try using it more and see how things go.

The guidance (at least where I am) is not to pump before 6 weeks as that's how long it takes to balance supply.

The more you latch and feed the more your body will produce as it's supply and demand. Baby is the most efficient way to get milk out and will always increase supply way more than a pump/collector.

I appreciate getting the sleep but I'd personally for now hold off on the bottle being given until your supply is balanced cos unless you are awake at that time pumping to replace the feed your supply will drop and if you are awake anyway you may as well be feeding directly.
