We have our booking appointment coming up soon and I’m nervous we will be asked about police involvement. I’m not sure what to say if it comes up.
Six years ago my partner and I had a loud argument and the police were called by a neighbor. I was arrested under suspicion of common assault but charges were refused by the police. We haven’t had any issues since and have worked really hard at improving our communication and our relationship is in the best place it has ever been.
I’m scared they will think I am not fit to be a mother, or that we are not fit to be parents because of this. The incident with the police was a wake up call that we needed to improve our communication, which we have done, and have had no further issues since.
Neither of us have ever had any other involvement with the police and we are very stable and healthy adults in our 30s.
So my questions are:
1) were you asked if police had been involved with your and your current partner’s (baby’s other parent) relationship?
2) if we are asked, is it better to be truthful and risk a whole investigation, or keep this to ourselves since we know things are very different now and there is no risk to baby?

As far as I can remember there are no questions around police involvement, I am sure those who are heavily involved in the criminal justice system/social services etc are flagged and monitored accordingly…..but no direct questions from what I remember. They do ask you if you are safe at home and at risk of domestic abuse etc. x

I was never asked about this, but if they do ask, best to be honest. They may have records. Or same neighbours may complain in the future. You don’t want to lose credibility and if everything is as you say it is, then there’s nothing for you to worry about. Be prepared to stay on top of it though because a new baby is a big strain on any couple. So in your own interests and the interest of your baby do what you can to stay healthy in your relationship x
