Supplementing

Hello mamas ! I recently had to get my gallbladder removed & due to me being In the hospital for a few days . My supply did drop for a few days . I am supplementing. I just want to know if anyone has any rules when it comes to supplementing , like is there a certain schedule or the amount of times a day you give the baby formula. I just want to make sure I don’t do too much formula and not enough breastmilk .

Hey if you dont mind me asking? What was wrong with your gallbladder? I recently went to the hospital because i got this sharp pain in my upper abdomen and pain shootings on my back and got nauseas and dizzy! Pain was horrible! But they said i had a sludge ball in my gallbladder and i also just had my 3rd son 2 months ago

Hey . I started with major back pain . Thought it was just all the changes from giving birth , losing weight . Then I notice my urine being extremely dark . Had it tested & I had bilirubin in it , something that has to do with your liver . Then i woke up the next day and I had the sharp pain in the upper abdomen as well , it was intense. I went to the ER , they tested my blood & my gallbladder & my pancreas numbers were through the roof . I had inflammation in both and then I also had a stone stuck . So they had to wait for it to past through so I can get the gallbladder token out .

When I supplemented the first month i would give my baby as many ounces as i could in a feeding of breastmilk and if still hungry offered 1 oz of formula

There’s no schedule or amount of times a day I’ve heard of! Since breastmilk or formula is preference anyway…? My IBCLC said even as little as 2 oz of breastmilk a day has all of the benefits! I never mix formula and breastmilk in one bottle, but I think some moms do? If I have to do a feeding with both I just use 2 separate bottles

@Carla omg i had the sharp pain as well and went to the ER they did blood work but nothing unusual! But they did an ultrasound and had a sludge ball so they sent me with pain medicine and to speak to a specialist about it to see what i need for resolution! Omg it was painful! Hope you feel better soon!

@Daniela yeah it’s crazy how things can happen.. apparently they say this kind of stuff is common after labor

I supplement my baby formula mixed with breastmilk, making sure both are at the same temperature to avoid losing breastmilk nutrients :) I don’t make enough so this has worked well and his weight is amazing 🥰🥰 If need be I have to give him a full formula bottle, I just make sure I wait a little bit longer since formula is more filling than breastmilk so about 4-4.5 hours! When I do half and half he normally eats every 3-4 hours

@Christine so you can mix breast milk and formula together ? How much do you usually do . I feel like i only pump a good amount in the morning for like 2-3 bottles

hey there! tbh, I just kinda went with the flow and tried to keep a balance, like offering breastmilk first and then formula if needed, but every baby is different, so just listen to your little one! Just looked it up on the 'Heal Baby Care App' and here's what it says: "It's great that you're being proactive about your baby's feeding! When supplementing with formula, a common approach is to offer it after breastfeeding sessions, especially if your baby seems hungry. Aim for a balance; many parents start with one or two formula feeds a day and adjust based on your baby's needs and your milk supply. It's also helpful to monitor your baby's cues for hunger and fullness. How old is your baby, and how often are you currently breastfeeding?

@Carla yes! I haven’t had any issues, little one is gaining weight well! Since I’ve been pumping more throughout the day, I normally give about 3 oz of breast milk and 2 oz of formula. I just make sure both are at the same temp. If one hot liquid is poured into cold, it kills the good properties in breastmilk!
