Can parents with black and ginger hair have a ginger baby?

Hey, im a full blown ginge my partner has black hair, hes certain that we cant have a ginger baby because dark hair is the more dominant gene, i think theres a chance i could still have a ginge.
This might be basic biology but i never studied genes in school. So is it possible? (Only myself 3rd child and my brother 1st child are ginger in my family)

The red gene needs to be on both sides but in our case I have Dark brown hair, my husband has light brown and we have one blond son and two red heads. The red comes from my husbands grandma and then 4 generations back in my family.

Darks usually dominant but I have dark brown hair and hazel eyes and I have a blonde bright blue eyed child because that’s what his dad is 💁🏻‍♀️🤣 both your genes are present both can have a factor in what the child will look like ☺️

I have a ginger baby, I have dark hair and my husband is blond. Both parents have to pass on a ginger gene, though, so to have a ginger child your partner would also have to pass them a ginger gene. We both have ginger uncles so there is ginger in both sides of our families

Avatar

Yes you can. My husband and I both have brown hair. His mother is ginger and he has a ginger beard but I have no known ginger on either side of my family at least 4 generations back however my daughter arrived with very ginger hair! We did some research and there’s a 25% chance this baby will be ginger too!

I have bright ginger hair and my partner has dark black hair and we currently have a ginger 1 year old x

i think the ginger gene is possibly more dominant! i work with a colleague who is ginger, and her ex husband is brunette, and they had three kids together, the eldest and the youngest are both super ginger, the middle is brunette! (but a fairly light brown) xx

Avatar

If dark is dominant then you can have a ginger kid, both of you need to have the recessive ginger gene but because dark is dominant he only needs to have 1 dark to be dark if that make sense so he could easily have 1 dark and 1 ginger and pass the ginger to a child…so much easier to explain in a diagram lol

I mean… have you seen Prince Harry’s kids lol.

My mom has black hair and my dad had red hair. Me and my 2 siblings all have red hair.

Avatar

Yes! My mum is ginger and pale with blue eyes, my dad has black hair with dark olive features and I’m ginger. Both parents have to be carriers in order to have a ginger child but it’s defo possible he’s a carrier even without any ginger features himself

Avatar

In very basic genetic terms there’s a 1 in 4 chance if he also carries the ginger gene as its recessive, but hair colours involve more than one gene so it’s more complicated.

Avatar

Slightly different but a close family friend has brown hair, pretty much all of them, they’re mixed black and white however all the girls born from the friend and her sister have blond/white hair! They have no idea where it comes from but we are all assuming a deceased ancestor

Avatar

You can but darker colors are dominant genes and lighter colors are recessive…
UNLESS
Both halves of the whole have recessive genes which increases the likelihood of the offspring having one or multiple of said recessive gene.

It’s really interesting actually, I’d look up the dominant recessive gene chart and do some research for fun or out of curiosity. I learned about it in biology and it was interesting enough for me to remember.

Avatar

Just because the dark gene is dominant doesn't mean it will always be victorious lol it might be like 1 in 4 chance or something but if he carries a dormant ginger gene anywhere within his family history, it could present itself

Avatar

I have brown eyes, my hubby brown eyes, yet one our 3 kids has blue... it's not impossible, there are just degrees of likelihood.

Yikes some of yall need to go back to middle school science 😂😂

parent one has dark hair
Parent 2 had ginger hair
Baby will most likely have brown hair BUT it’s possible to inherit blond or ginger hair from this combo

I’ll add a pic below OP because someone of these responses have my jaw dropping 😂😂

My mum and dad both have dark brown / black hair. Both me and my sister have red hair, there is red on both sides and Irish roots too so both to blame 🤣 I love it, won't go grey, everyone is jealous of the colour and it changes colour depending on the season!

Avatar

My brother had a ginger kid he's like me black and Mexican his wife was German and Italian and her hair was ginger oncecas a kid but it turned dark blonde on its own but theirs daughter turned out ginger with an afro

Avatar

My mum has dark curly hair, my dad is ginger. Both me AND my brother are ginger 😂

You both would need to carry the gene for red-hair. If you both do then it is possible baby gets red hair even if you both have black hair.

My neighbors have 4 redheads!! The wife has brown hair and the dad has a black beard? The first 3 have blue ass eyes but their younger one has brown except her parents have blue eyes.

I have black wavy hair and brown eyes. My mother and father have black hair and brown eyes. My sisters have black hair and brown eyes and so do their kids. Mine? She came out welt pale skin, brown curly hair with little bits of red in it when she's in the sun, and hazel eyes. The donor is white with brown curly hair and blue eyes. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I just saw at the park the other day and mixed baby, dark skinned but bright ginger hair. The dad was black and very dark skinned and mom was white with very ginger hair and baby looked exactly like daddy but with freckles and ginger hair like the mom! 😍

Avatar

My mums blonde, my dads dark haired, I’m ginger

I’m ginger, my husbands mousy brown, we have 2 blonde and 1 ginger child

The ginger gene is recesssive so the parents both have to be carriers but neither have to have that coloured hair

Avatar

Both my parents have black hair. My grandparents/ great grand are not ginger. My siblings are not ginger. I am. Xxxx

Avatar

My mother is ginger, my dad's got black hair, my sister was born with ginger but it changed to brown and my brother and I were both born blonde!

Avatar

I’m red, husband is dark brown almost black. Our daughter is blonde.

Genetics are pot luck.

He has the dominant brown eye gene, baby 1 has green eyes, baby 2 has blue. Dominant is not a guarantee.

Avatar

Hey hi hello 🤗 my hair is dark brown almost black (naturally) daddy's hair is strawberry blonde. Baby girl has red hair and baby boys hair is a darker reddish brown ❤️ definitely can have red heads.

Avatar

My uncle is a redhead and his wife is Hispanic (pretty dark). They have a ginger son haha

Avatar

My cousin is ginger af and both his parents have very dark hair! Basically anything is possible 😂

Induction?

Anyone been induced before? Was it more painful? Better than thought? Worse than thought? Worth it? Thoughts?

Induction or c section?

As a last resort, would you rather be induced or have a planned c section?

Really not liking the thought of being induced from people’s experiences I’ve read!

Growth scan

So had my 28 week midwife appointment- all good but after measuring bump- I’m now waiting on a scan within a few days as bump is measuring small I’m not worried as I am guessing a tape measure is hardly accurate but
For anyone who has been in a similar position- what was the outcome after the scan? Was the baby on the smaller side ?
Was baby measuring normal?

Thanks
