Help! Bad eczema just not getting better

My son has had bad skin for around 2 months now! We have been backwards and forwards with the doctors- had fungal creams for fungal infections in his creases. We have used steroid creams on patches that are really bad with eczema. Then we use hydramol all over as a moisturiser! The patches of eczema and the fungal infections clear with the creams, but the minute we stop using them they come back within two days!

He does have cmpa and does suffer with hard stools which he is on lactose for! I’m not sure if he has another allergy or what, but it’s just so hard to pin it down!

Has anyone else experience this with no progress with the skin getting better and what did you do !?!

Cover it in zinc cream, and hopefully once it's dried out a little, it'll start to heal 🤞

Did you taper off the steroid use rather than just stop using?

Avatar

no they just keep saying use it for a week then stop

The advice we’ve had from both gp and derm was every day for a week, then every other day for a week, then every third day, so the skin becomes less and less reliant on it. I will say we also had a different steroid in the end that was a game changer, among other things like diet changes. But understanding how to use the steroid properly helped so much.

Is anyone has any recommendations of creams which are not steroids?

My son had cmpa and was also allergic to soy and eggs.

Drought secret products more mature based may help!

We’ve been in and still are in same boat I’ve stopped steroids as felt was getting worse but I didn’t taper off so unsure if this may have caused it to worsen. I was using once a day as opposed to twice daily then just stopped. It’s been 2 weeks it’s taken a while to settle

Redness calmed down with drought secret products particularly rescue butter but the “itch” is always there even when skin particularly legs isn’t red so very strange

I do feel he’s better without steroids though

You know my son does the same: Scratch his leg even tho is not red. And yeah I wasn’t taper off as well when we initially used it… it’s awful to be in this situation! Good luck and thank you for the advice. Xx

It’s really shocking how many people are just given a steroid without being told how to use it! People also tend to use their barrier creams
/emollients with it and that affects its use too. It was only when we swapped GP due to moving house we were prescribed a different steroid and emollient and told how to use them properly and it’s really helped so much!

I could’ve written this myself. My daughter is 9 months with CMPA, egg allergy and eczema. I’ve found that when we used hydrocortisone it worked amazingly. We were advised to taper off, however it didn’t work the same during her second flare up. Her second flare up was worse. The hydrocortisone didn’t make an inch of difference. When we went back to the dr we were prescribed a slightly stronger steroid (beginning of March). I’ve still not opened it. I started using hydromol 6x a day and Lush dream cream (someone advised on this app to try it) and the difference it has made is crazy. Her red patches have literally gone. My only concern is the itching. I can’t seem to get rid of it..
I hope you find something that works for you and your baby ❤️

totally agree!!! Like GPs are so quick to prescribe steroid creams and every time I went there I didn’t see the same dr so I got different advice as to how to use it. Scary especially as our babies are so young x

same journey 100 percent….the itch is always there even though it’s not red it’s there! Wish docs would give more education it’s awful our babies suffering .

the same here different docs each time 😖 so frustrating to know what is helpful

Maybe try Elidel? It’s prescription based non steroid cream. Using it for my baby now.

Hi do you have any advice on how to use the steroids and emollients together properly?x

Avatar

we were advised to apply the steroid at least 10 mins before the barrier cream and don’t apply mixed together. The barrier affects the potency and obviously if applied beforehand the steroid cannot then do its job effectively. I think some people mix them hoping they can get a better spread over the body but the skin is then only getting a very small amount of steroid which could be more harmful in the long run.
