Is it normal for babies to get really upset after they’ve played with flashing and music playing toys?

Our baby has a max limit of about 10-15 mins after that she gets super grumpy and we have tears. It’s like she gets overwhelmed with anything that lights up or sings songs. Even books they play sounds gets her upset. To be honest it’s actually most toys in general now I come to think of it 🤦🏻‍♀️ but mostly the noisy toys. Basically play time on her mat is the worst part of her day. She does like singing though and she copes ok doing that for prolonged periods of time at baby class. She’s fine with loud sounds, traffic etc... and copes absolutely fine out in social situations, cafes, restaurants, parks. So why does she get so angry when we’re at home surrounded by her home comfort’s? She’s seven months old.

It does sound like sensory "overload" ! Out and about, the stimulants are more human-paced and organic whereas the toys are probably unpredictable and sudden to her at this stage, Shes most likely figuring out how to develop independent play and could be getting frustrated that she can't yet control the toys or play with them how her mind wants to e.g not yet developed the co-ordination skills to press a button for cause and effect. She enjoys singing, and tolerates that for a longer time because its rhythmic and predictable and of course comes from you or any other relatives that are around a lot - you're her comfort!❤️ It's definitely nothing to worry about, it's normal development 💖

The flashing lights concern me. Is there a history of epilepsy or seizures in your family? Not trying to scare you, but the flashing lights may be irritating to her or causes a headache. That may be why she's grumpy. She just can't express that this bothers her or is hurting her. Have you spoken to your doctor about this?

My LG doesn’t have any noisy, lights or even plastic toys. Most of the time they’re not well made anyways and I’d prefer to buy her wooden toys that will grow with her but also I feel a bit funny about the noise and lights. After a while it does my head in😂so I just think what’s it doing for her. Maybe see if you can get a few very basic toys if you don’t already (not sure how old she is) but some blocks, a stacking ring things like that and see how she does. Also just 1 toy out at a time if you don’t already sometimes where there’s multiple things they want to do they can get stressed xx

Overstimulation is a big fat no in babies and children- Even adults!
