Gestational diabetes test

I have been referred for this test but I have no idea what it entails. Has anyone had it before in previous pregnancy? Is it just a blood test? I’m working so trying to figure out how long I’ll need to tell my office I’ll be away for.

Yes. I had it in my last pregnancy. When you get there they will take a blood test (you have to fast from 10pm the night previous) and then you drink a glucose drink, wait either 1-2 hours and then they will do a second blood test to see how your body processes it x

I haven't had it before, but I'm due for it. As far as I know, you have to fast from 10pm the night before, then you go in the next day for your first blood test, then you're given a sugary substance to drink, you then wait an hour and get another blood test, then another hour and another blood test. All in all, should talk between 3-4 hours I believe. X

@charlotte do you wait in the hospital?

@Ashley see my midwife never told me any of this, just that she would book me in for one and I’m not even sure why other than my first baby was big at 9.6pounds 🤣 I probably should have asked more questions but just thought it would be a quick blood test 🙈

Yes, I just had to wait it out in the waiting room so suggest taking a book to read or something to do whilst you’re there

From what I’ve heard, they don’t let you leave so you’ll have to stay at the hospital and wait, definitely take some entertainment with you! X

@charlotte good idea! Thank you 🙂 it’s in the afternoon so will just try book the rest of the afternoon off work instead of going back after. Did you feel ok after it all?

Yeah I was fine after! Just really hungry from not eating all day. If you do have gestational diabetes, it can make you feel a little bit faint/dizzy/sick, so just let someone know if you do, or take someone with you! X

I had GD in my previous pregnancy and failed the test really bad (11.4) but didn’t have any side effects whatsoever, felt completely normal, then I did a test for this pregnancy and again no side effects and no GD so I wouldn’t worry too much about any symptoms you might get, it’s not a tell tale sign of the outcome imo. I would also ring and ask if you can change the appointment for the morning as in the 6 tests I’ve had they’ve all been morning appointments and due to the fasting element I couldn’t imagine fasting all morning for an afternoon appointment! But then again you might be ok with that it’s just a suggestion! Xx

@Nire I called the midwife and she said it’s 9am appointment so that makes sense. I have absolutely no symptoms so interesting to hear that there isn’t always symptoms! Hopefully will come back all clear x

Fingers crossed for you🤞🏼 x

I’ve been referred for one as I was borderline last time and maybe they’ve seen something in my sample. With my daughter I had to go to the hospital once a week for a test. This time around the tests will be sent to be to do at home. Maybe it’s just my area but it’s going to be much more convenient. You can’t exercise or do much moving around once you’ve had the drink and waiting for your results.
