Clueless about what clothes to buy & pack for hospital bag

Totally embarrassed to say this but what should I be buying for baby born in July (in the UK)? I feel like the unpredictable weather is throwing me off. I am really struggling with what sizing to buy (I’m on target for 7lb 5 baby), do I buy newborn sizes of everything and if so how many? Or just start at 0-3? How many vests, sleepsuits do you buy in each size? And do you buy 3-6 and 6-9 months too? How many vests and sleepsuits do you pack to go to the hospital? And in what sizes? Are we all just guessing/over packing or does someone actually have insight in to what to buy and pack please? 😂 Thank you x

Lool we're in the same boat! Someone help!!

It’s a complete guess of what size your baby will be! Although, my friend gave birth to an 8 pound 10 baby but 0-3 was too big on him. I am taking both 0-1 and 0-3. I haven’t bought anything 3-6 or 6-9 yet as will do nearer the time when more suitable winter clothing is available. I’ve got about 12 sleep suits in each size. Friends of mine have said that you can sometimes go through 3-4 a day with explosions and vomits! 🤣 I’m also taking some sleeveless bodysuits just incase it is unbelievably hot in hospital so baby can just wear that and a nappy. X

Looking at how off the measured size versus actual baby are, we will be having both sizes handy (newborn and 0-3) and the shops are near the hospital so there could be things required on the day which poor husband may have to pop to the shop for 😆

I’m due my first in July so have no experience but I have packed a few newborn vests and a few in 0-3 plus a couple sleep suits in both sizes just incase. I’m mostly struggling on a cute coming home outfit as all the nice ones seem to be thick winter ones haha Also no idea what to pack for myself

I had packed newborn and 0-3 for both vests and sleepsuits but have heard everyone saying that the 0-3 are absolutely massive as the newborn goes up to 10lb, I’m thinking of changing the 0-3 stuff to a couple 0-1 month and then the newborn ones 😀

In terms of sizes it’s best to get both newborn and 0-3m. 0-3 is surprisingly big. For the hospital bag I would suggest packing 2-3 bodies in newborn and 0-3m, plus 2 sleepsuits of each of those sizes. Make sure all your stuff at home for those sizes are washed and easy to grab in case you have a longer stay - that way someone can go get something for you easily. For July generally I am getting: tshirt bodies (x10) light trousers (x3) leggings with feet (x3) light sleepsuits (x5) kimono style light tops for layering in case it’s cold (x2) cardigans (x2) - in just 0-3m as this can still be used for younger with the sleeves rolled up If it’s hot it’s likely that the baby will only be wearing a nappy and body. I expect to use things like the trousers in the morning when it can be a bit cooler.

My baby was on target for 7lb 2oz but came out 8lb 1oz. He didn’t fit newborn at all, we went straight into 0-3 month but he was 58cm long and average is around 48-56cm, he was thin and tall. And he was only in this for 2 weeks and he went into 3-6 months (which feels crazy). I’d get around 10 of each 0-3 months vests and sleepsuits and maybe 5 each of newborn vests and sleepsuits. But only pack 3 or 4of each in the bag. Take muslin cloths for feeding, helps with wiping up any sick too. We only went through around 3 changes a day initially. If your baby fits newborn straight away you could always ring someone immediately to pick up more newborn sleepsuits or vests and get them turned over in the wash. I’d save your money on buying any more than that, we had soooo many newborn outfits that went completely unused. Pack a woollen hat and cardigan. You’ll be checking their temp by touch on their chest or back so you can add or reduce layers as you go. Pack a cellular blanket too x

My first baby was born at the end of June 2022 when we had the 40 degree heatwave in the July! So I feel a little bit clueless as clearly he didn’t wear much! 🙈 So this time I’m thinking layers, as it is so hard to predict and it can change so quickly from one day to the next can’t it! So I’ve bought some little lightweight cardis as well as rompers and some babygrows/vests. Also have cellular blankets so hopefully I can layer her up/down as needed! In terms of sizing, with my first he was in first size for probably the first week or so then briefly went into up to 1 month before it got hot. We found it was his feet that got too big for the babygrows before the rest of him outgrew them 😂 so I’m taking a mix of both sizes again this time. To be honest, I think we are all just winging it even if we’ve done it before 😂 xx

So glad I’m not alone 😂 saving everything everyone above has said. Thank you mamas x
