How long does it usually take for an American guy to want to start a relationship?

I have a genuine question. I’m an immigrant living in the US, and I started officially dating my fiancé when we had been seeing each other for about three months. To my surprise, he recently said that I gave him an ultimatum to start dating, but I didn’t see it that way. Back then we had been spending time together regularly, and I had developed real feelings for him. Then a friend told me he was still on Hinge, and I told him that if he still wanted to keep his options open, that was fine but I’d rather move on with my life because I knew what I was looking for. He said at the time that it felt too early for him but he decided to start a relationship with me. Was it really too early?

We’re currently engaged and have a baby together, so it really surprised me when he said I gave him an ultimatum to start a relationship. I never saw it that way. I was just being honest about my feelings, if I cared about him but he still wanted to see other people, that was his choice, and I respected that. But because I had real feelings, I felt like I needed to step back to protect myself if he wasn’t on the same page. That’s not an ultimatum! It was me setting a boundary so I wouldn’t end up getting hurt. I definitely didn’t like his comment, it made me question myself. Are you marrying me because we have a baby together or because you truly love me? Shitty situation to be in it
