Weaning and eczema

Hi all, my girl has had horrible eczema for the last month or so. We have got it controlled to a point of not being super itchy and red raw, but there are still lots of patches and spots all over her just less than when it was really bad. Anyway we are due to start weaning and I’m panicking as I have no idea how I will know if she has a reaction with a hives rash. Her skin changes so much that she can have a cluster of spots somewhere in the morning and they have gone by mid day but then gets another patch elsewhere. How am I meant to know how to navigate this? Any advice?

Hi there, no advice on your question as such - but I would advise you put a barrier gel like Aquaphor or Vaseline around her mouth before she eats. Irritated skin can react to food that touches it and cause a reaction. I find, for my daughter, Aquaphora helps prevent that. It also helps prevent stinging when wet food touches any rawness. Also, if you are in a position to, you could considering getting her a skin prick allergy test so that you’d know if she had any food reactions that way.

In my experience, hives come on very suddenly after eating the allergen food. When my boy had peanut he came up in hives around his mouth and neck very suddenly after indigestion so I was sure of the direct link. Though if you’re saying new patches come and go quite frequently that might be a challenge!

I give the known allergens eg egg/ dairy when his skin looks better... He flared with egg and dairy and it was quite obvious. All his known eczema patches became very angry within a few hours and it got better with antihistamine. Interestingly he's positive for egg on skin prick but not dairy. Hives also looks different to his eczema rash. They're raised white bumps.
