Just found out I’m having a boy! (Question about fetal fraction)

I’m having mine and my bfs first baby and we did the NIPT. I just got the results back and it says that the presence of Y chromosome was detected!! We’re so excited, we were hoping for a boy for our first🩵 I read the accuracy of the test is 98-99%. Does the fetal fraction indicate anything to do with accuracy? Or is just the presence of fetal DNA? Mine said 8.8%.

Congrats!!! The fetal fraction refers to the amount of fetal DNA in your blood. From what I’ve learned, when it comes to gender, the NIPT test is rarely wrong!

@Amber Thank you! 🥰 Yeah and I would assume it’s especially less likely to be wrong when it detected Y chromosomes

The NIPT test is rarely wrong because of what exactly it is. When you're pregnant, your child's embryonic cells travel through your body via the umbilical cord, just like how your blood goes to them to sustain them. The NIPT test takes that fetal DNA and checks for Y chromosomes (can't check for x because you have XX usually). Usually, boys are XY chromosomes, and girls are XX, so the presence of Y means boy. That's also why they say if you're having twins/multiples and do the NIPT, they can only tell you if at least one twin/multiple is a boy and not what all the babies are. The rare times it's wrong is likely because not all boys are XY, and not all girls are XX. The 20-week scan will confirm for you, but congrats on your boy!

In my case I've done a nipt test at home and got the result of girl. Being that I have 3 boys I'm excited but don't want to be too excited because still not sure if it's a girl.

@Shelly Oo how exciting!! If you’re over like 10 weeks (sometimes some detect earlier but it’ll be more accurate later) it’s unlikely to be inaccurate. Did it show the fetal fraction so you know it tested the baby’s DNA?

No hon, they just send a lil video clip with results and put there was no y chromosomes detected..I didn't that test at 8w3d. I just done another to test the theory..I'm currently 11w3d. So let's see lol
