Potty training emergency

Hello my boy is 3.5 yrs old and is still not potty trained. He is in day care and they have moved him to a class where he can’t wear pull-ups. He wears underwear to school and being wet does not bother him , and he will not verbalize when he needs to go potty. At home I have to constantly take him so that he will go , but he still runs and hides from me. I am a single mom , so he doesn’t have a male figure to follow and mimic. And I live with my parents and they won’t let me just let him go bottomless at home, which I have noticed has worked. Please any tips are greatly needed. I am at the point where I will pay someone to help me. 🙏🥲

Why if he's in daycare he cant wear pull ups? Like I understand potty training but if they arent ready themselves then it's a whole fight. Like daycare is there for babies and toddlers. It would be different if he was going into kindergarten and still not potty trained. But he's only 3.y SD didn't get potty trained until about 4 and half bc she was like your son, didn't mind being wet and didn't verbalize when she had to go to bathroom.

I'm in the trenches with you too mama, I have a husband but when he's not at work he WIL NOT help me with potty training. The daycare is working with training them at school but they're still not verbalizing when they have to go I have to take them every 30 mins and they will pee but still hide to poop. If I tried the no underwear method they would just pee on the floor and think it's funny. They don't care if they're wet either so underwear doesn't work either

I’d suggest, the most important thing is to keep your neutral calm regardless of how frustrating it might feel. No showing frustration with accidents, using potty in his presence all the time, commenting on what you doing “when I feel like pee pee is coming I’m going to go sit on the toilet, all done now, feels good, I’m gonna wash my hands now”, something like this.
Maybe prize system? I used little cars from Walmart (they are like $1 dollar each and they have a big variety), maybe treats that he usually doesn’t get (for my son it was lollipops and animal crackers, the only time he’d get those if he used the potty and his undies were dry), some mini puzzles or mini colouring books or whatever drives his interest at the moment, like small little thing for every potty use.

Hi Erika! I have 3 boys and done this with all of them. My youngest is also 3 and he was scared and refusing to go on a toilet. So what I did is every 30 mins have them sit on the toilet/potty and just sit for 5 mins even if nothing happened it just helped them getting used to it. And when they would actually use it I would give them a small gift. One kid liked getting 1 chocolate kiss, the other kids would like a small toy. I did start them all off sitting when they go for the first couple days and once they got used to figuring out the difference between the feeling of peeing and pooping they would start standing to pee. I did this on a weekend that I did not have to leave the house because it does require consistency. By day 2 or 3 they were all potty trained. Hope this helps!

I will answer this for you as a preschool teacher! The classes are typically separated by age and for each age range they focus on different things, a 3.5-4 year old is normally not going to need to be potty trained and won’t be on the teachers to do list. It would literally distract a teacher and take a lot of time to have to take multiple children (if they allowed non potty trained children in the class) to change and clean them up. Usually in a class with 3-4 year olds each teacher typically has up to ten kids on their own whereas if it’s a younger age group they have less. That’s ALOT to deal with at one time and I can completely understand being potty trained to be in the class being a requirement. A pull up is still a diaper. And most children at that age go to the potty on their own. Again, it would be a lot for a teacher of up to ten 3-4 year olds to have to deal with. To answer your question.

Have your husband take him to the bathroom and show how boys do it.
Ask every 25-30mins if he has to go.
Give prices , stickers or a cookie. Bigger price for #2.
Always praise when he tries, even if he doesn’t go. Do not shame for accidents.
The one that usually always works is, after a snack, have him sit in the potty and watch a show. That usually does it without the “pressure”. And once he goes potty, make it a hugeeee deal!
Those are all my tricks 😅

oh okok. Thank you. I always thought that daycare was there to be just kinda like babysitting I guess to younger kids that arent school age yet. I never had to deal with daycare even with my older two SK they never went to daycare, always had a friend sitter so had no idea it was more of a classroom setting.

I used a sticker board to get my kids potty trained. Just a regular peace of cardboard that I drew on and got some stickers they liked and gave them 1 sticker for every pee in the potty and 2 for poops. 4 stickers if they did both. I didn’t give them any additional prizes because they only cared for the stickers. We also had a small plastic kids toilet we used because the regular toilet was scary for them. Good luck! You can do this!

My son was similar. We introduced a reward jar so he gets a token for a wee/poo in the toilet and an extra token if he asks to go. He then picks a special treat once the jar is full. Seems to have worked a treat so far

yeah, I had 3-4 year olds and they typically are learning how to pour their own drinks and put food on their own plates, learnings the days of the week, the weather, seasons, how to tie shoes ect

We did a sticker chart. I was dubious initially but it definitely worked.

No advice I’m afraid but what a little cutie! 💙

awh little dude, he will do it when hes ready, some boys are 4 at my boys nursery school in Uk and get wet pants while playing outside in the garden, their mums say they play so much they dont realise it happens? so your boy is not the only one girl, please please don't pressure your self so hard, hes only 3.5 not sure why not allowed pullups, it would only save teachers time if he had wee wee in pullups its not that they have to jump and change him that second i dunno, all this pressure on mums and kids... sending love and hugs , hes so cute xxx

My son struggled with daycare and we did the potty watch off Amazon. It gives them reminders every 30, 60, or 90 minutes and plays a song. It helped get him into the habit and he successfully weaned off it after 2 weeks!

My 3.5 old son is still not potty trained. Were working on it but hes not making a lot of effort on his part. We learned his schedule and we put him on the toilet when its time and he pees in the toilet but he will never tell us when he feels like going. If we dont remember to take him to the toilet, he just pees his pants or in his diaper. And forget about poops, its always in the diaper or in his undies 😩 we have a lonnnnng way to go still

They will let you know when they’re ready. He told me he was ready to wear underwear’s full time tried it once before he ended up wetting the bed. I didn’t yell I told him I wanted to see him wear big boy pants all the time no more pull up. We put him back in pull ups only at night couple weeks later tried underwears day and night. Woohoo 🎉 I just let him do it all on his own had a few accidents during the day but not anymore and goes on his own. You can do it! Of course it was pretty easy for us but everyone’s child is different. I say the less pressure on them the better.

she just said she doesn’t have a male figure for him to mimic and she’s a single mom 🤷🏽‍♀️

Sorry was stuck at a baseball tournament running after a toddler all day while trying to hide from the sun. Multitasking fail 🫠
so sorry I missed that part!! The other tricks still work. Little kids sitting on the potty would still be Easier to Learn and the way they go for a few years.
Sitting helps simplify the process by focusing on one position for both pee and poop, will avoid confusion.
The make figure thing is just for him to see other people doing it, so you can do it and show him how it is ok and nothing bad happens. Being happy and excited after you go can also help, like saying, “yay, mommy went potty” and giving high fives 😅

, she said she is a single mum....

thank you again for, it’s all wonderful advice

I second what said about sitting down my son is 3.5 years old and still sits. It’s no big deal that they go like us while they’re small.
