Slow leaking amniotic fluid a bad thing?

I’m 28.4 weeks! For the past few weeks I’ve been leaking amniotic fluid, I thought it was normal because it was not soaking anything at all just dripping like discharge and I know it is amniotic because it’s clear, odorless or sometimes smells sweet, this morning however I had a small gush in bed and it startled me. Anyways is this normal or should I talk to ob? Baby is very active and moving all the time but I did some reading and apparently it’s not normal but in these instances everyone talks about big gushes so I’m confused 😞

You should’ve definitely spoken to them when you first realised it was waters , not everyone has big gushes of water. Mine trickled when they broke and then my back waters went that was more of a gush but nothing major … please go in

Baby can run out of amniotic fluid if you’re leaking

You should go to the hospital immediately. Only 10% of women have a gush of liquid. My water broke at 33 weeks and I was not allowed to leave the hospital until 35 weeks when baby was finally delivered. You are putting both yourself and baby at a huge risk of infection and require minimum 3 days of antibiotics. Baby requires 2 doses of steroids to boost their lung capacity as they could be delivered at any time. Go to the hospital immediately that is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible.

You’re at risk of infection within the first 24-48 hours of your waters breaking so if you’ve been leaking for a few weeks you need to get to the hospital and get seen and checked over. Both of you need antibiotics and baby needs steroids to strengthen their lungs as they could literally come at any point. I went into labour at 36+4 weeks and as soon as my waters broke I had antibiotics given to reduce the risk of infection. Why haven’t you been seen as you as realised that your waters have started to leak? That is very dangerous😕

As someone currently going through PPROM, a full rupture, please please go and get checked out. The risk of infection leading to sepsis, pre-term labour and potential effects on baby's lungs are huge. Don't want to scare you at all, it sounds like you have a slow leak which rarely leads to any of these things but I'm in the hospital twice a week for monitoring due to the risks so I would really recommend that you get checked out ❤️ it's scary but you can message me anytime if you like x

@Molly (She/her) Thank you so much, I genuinely did not know as to why I posted this in the “first time mums”forum, whenever I do research it’s been kind of grey as to why I thought it was normal. I would do anything to protect my baby but calling me irresponsible was a bit harsh, I’m still learning, although I appreciate the tone because I sense the urgency in my misunderstanding 💕 It also didn’t help that I’ve been going for regular ultrasounds and they tell me everything is fine and normal, my last one being just a week ago, I’m on my way to the hospital now to get it sorted.

Sorry if it felt harsh. More trying to convey the severity of the situation. You may not be allowed to leave so just be prepared for that. And be prepared for a preemie baby. The amniotic fluid is just their urine at this point so they continue to produce and you will continue to leak. It will not seal back over. They may continue to grow or they may stop growing...totally depends.

@Lauren Yes I’m on my way to get it checked now, I didn’t know it was so serious also because my ultrasounds have been fine and I’ve had two since this has been going on and no one said anything was wrong. I genuinely thought it was just a apart of pregnancy discharge as I read in some places, going to get checked now so I can be monitored about it. Thank you 💕

@Molly (She/her) yes I got that haha that’s why I said I sensed the tone so I get it, I called my ob but they are not available on weekends so I’m going to the hospital but basically I may not have a mucus plug? I am still confused because this has been going on for so long and the baby is fine given my ultrasounds, but I took it more seriously this morning because I had a small gush, very small but enough to wake me up

As above - I’m glad you are going to get seen. Mine went at 32 weeks and continued to slowly leak. I was giving steroid shots for baby’s lungs and a course of antibiotics then strict rules of things not to do like baths / swimming and had to be checked every 2 days until I gave birth. Let us know how you get on good luck! X

Update: I got swabbed and tested and apparently it is not amniotic fluid so everything should be okay, doctor said cervix is closed and looks great. Thank you guys for your help, and if I suspect anything again, I will check right away!

That's the ideal situation!!! I definitely questioned and googled the difference between discharge, amniotic fluid and "did i pee my pants". Pregnant bodies are a trip!!

U could be in preterm labor

I had PPROM at 20 weeks and was out on antibiotics and had to have weekly scan etc to make sure there was enough fluid around her. Please go to the hospital! Xx
