My son had his HV review yesterday and she said she's a small concern with his speech as he doesn't say 'me, I, mine' ect but then went onto say he's average. Pissed me off how she just focused so much on his speech and nothing else. However is there anything I can do to help him? We talk all the time, educational tv is on in the background. He can understand what I'm saying he just struggles. No matter how much I repeat things he doesn't copy. So like for snack I asked do you want the strawberries or the yoghurt and he points to whichever, so I say 'oh you want the yoghurt' ect. Idk if he's just going to blossom randomly but he's got 6 months before he's referred to speech therapy š®āšØ

Mine doesnāt say all those yet. Tbh by the sounds of things after reading your post, mine is probably behind than most this age but he knows his alphabet, numbers, shapes, colours, animals and sounds, vehicles etc. When he wants something he usually just says the one word like āeatā, āwaterā āoutsideā or ājuiceā etc. In that sense heās quite bright but otherwise sounds like when we have our 2 year review theyāll say heās behind in speech! I guess itās not a bad thing to be referred?xx
@Shazida oh wow he's so clever! Mine doesn't know the alphabet, shapes. He knows blue, what the animals are by sound but not names and only knows 1-3. He knows his vehicles though. Kinda feel like I'm failing him. He speaks in sentences but it's complete gibberish and I think he kinda just stops when you don't know what he's sayingš« but he's just started nursery so I'm hoping that'll help him too. Oh no definitely not, just hoping to see if there's any tips anyone has to help before it gets to that stage xxx

My son has absolutely no issues at his HV review, he actually said my son is very advanced for his age. Yet he canāt doesnāt know the alphabet (he can say the letters but cant recite them), doesnāt do the same with numbers or shapes other than 2 or circle, and he doesnāt use me mine or I etc at all! I feel like your HV has focused solely on a few things but really their speech is an overall thing. As long as you encourage to expand speech in the next few months itāll all fall into place x

Hi we havenāt had our review yet, but I know mine is behind on his speech am the same as you, I am always talking to my little on, especially when weāre playing together, he can say around 20 words and I know it should be way more. I let him watch a bit of T.V which is usually educational, he can do actions to the songs really well but still hasnāt copied what theyāre saying, I find they always pick the last word up better so maybe try shorten your sentences, just try not to put pressure on him, am sure he will get there eventually x

Nursery is likely to help a lot. Mine started of by saying her name - ie talking about things in the third person, progressed to āmyā (eg my no like it) and then has recently started saying āIā more, and this progression has all been taught by nursery (as I kind of thought the āmyā stage was cute so didnāt correct it).
I think nursery also will teach āmineā quite quickly as most babies donāt like to share š

My firstborn was really behind his speech and didn't really talk until 3 except a lot of gibberish. It seems like you are already doing everything you can, lot of talking, lot of reading, singing,... the only thing I would recommend is maybe cut off on tv as much as possible even if it's educational and in the background. We were told when dealing with my son's speech that kids his age shouldn't watch more than 20-30 mins a day but we decided to cut the screen time completely or at least most of the time. It helped significantly with more than his speech. He also did a 6 week course at speech and language therapy but then they discharged him as he was progressing so well he didn't really need it. Good luck and don't worry his speech will come! My son is 5 now and speaks fluently two languages.
Thanks everyone youve made me feel a lot better. She made me feel a bit crap tbh. He's so clever in other ways, you can show him one thing once and that's it he'll be doing it there after. When he went to nursery on Thursday they said he didn't stop talking š so I'm hoping it'll be a massive help

sorry to jump on your comment, how did you manage without screen time? I can usually avoid putting it on to a certain extent for my little one, but itās my MIL who gives into him all the time or just puts it on for him anyway and lets him watch it for way too long, she doesnāt respect my views on too much screen time and when I say something it falls on deaf ears š© x

Weāve not had a 2 yr review yet but I work in early intervention for ASD (and adults) and we work closely with SLT too. With my little boy I model things a lot, constantly labelling things, modelling how he should say things i.e, if heās whinging he canāt reach something Iāll model āI want cup mummyā or āget the cupā, constant modelling of what he could say in that scenario, I donāt pressure him into copying but Iāll encourage it when heās in a good mood, if heās a little grizzly that day Iāll just model it as an example. I wouldnāt worry too much though they really do all develop on their own time and the HVās just have guidelines to follow and speech and language therapy isnāt a bad thing either, if he does need it so many children access it and make amazing progress through it. Xxx

It's not uncommon for boys to be later at speaking. My brother was referred for speech therapy and the day of his appointment he began rambling like he'd always spoken lol. Is this your first? Just asking because sometimes second babies can be lazy because older siblings often talk for them. If he is saying the average amount of words i wouldn't worry too much. I'd be more concerned if there was no verbal communication including babbling. My boy can say a lot of words but half the time he babbles still. Boys tend to concentrate on motor skills before talking. Hope that helps ease your mind a little. X

Mine has just started childminder ms but only goes2 days a week. Itāll definitely help with his speech being around others. Youāre not failing him at all. Definitely sounds like youāre doing everything you can already. He sounds bright Iām sure itāll just take time. All kids are different remember that xxx

Turn the tv off - read books etc instead xx
Regarding the tv comments it is just usually background noise. Hate it when it's too quiet in the dayš looks like he's gonna start listening to music instead lol. Thanks guys, you've been really helpful xx

We haven't had our review yet but my son doesn't say I, me, mine either.
He does know his alphabet, can count to 15 (working on upto 20) knows his colours, shapes, body parts, vehicles etc....
So I'm not worried about it, they all thrive in different ways and at different times xx

My little girl could do me but not the others⦠however a couple of weeks later she can now do the others and is referring to herself more with her name- she has a long first name so Iām not surprised itās taken a little longer - 4 syllables! Itāll come ā¤ļø

Speech therapy is a joke. It didn't do anything for my daughter. She didn't start talking until she started nursery. My little boy is 2 and just started nursery and he too is starting to try and say worlds now. Don't worry

I have my HV appointment on Thursday and I know I will get the same as my son has only just started talking.
I also work in a nursery in the baby room 1-3years and every child really is so different x
