Sitting up

My baby turns 7m in a few days and can steadily sit up and when actually engaged in something can stay sat still. When playing with his dad I timed he sat for 20 mins unsupported. The only thing is he throws himself back when he’s had enough, I’m normally sat behind him or have a cushion behind him so I thought maybe he’s doing it because he knows I’ll catch him, but one time I didn’t catch him in time and he fell straight back onto hard floor (no injuries caused, but it shocked him). I thought maybe after this it would stop but he still does it whenever he’s had enough of sitting up. Is this normal? I’m not sure how else I expect him to get back onto his tummy or back but? Thanks
