I have my niece over and she autistic. Can someone give me ideas on what I can do to communicate with her. How do I know if she’s cold, hungry, thirsty, sleepy, or anything. How can I learn cues. Anything can help!

how old is she? does she use ASL or an AAC?

I hate to say this but no. She is 3 years old. Also what is ACC? I know ASL.

My cousin is autistic and I grew up with her. Video games and tv were her big thing. Follow her lead. If she’s a baby just do all things normal. Set a timer for feedings every 2-3 hours if a baby. Tired she’ll yawn. Keep a blanket by your side just in case she is cold babies require 1 more layer than a adult

The previous comment is assuming they are non verbal

AAC is a type of device or app where she presses buttons and they vocalize the words of what she needs. most autistic kiddos in therapy are usually taught ASL or use AAC with their parents consent of course because some are working on getting their kiddo to vocalize on their own. what communication does she use with her parents?

oki. Parents are super young. So her parents just tell me to just give her the phone and she eats cereal a lot. She claps a lot when I get things right.

then the best thing you can do is show her things and try to gauge her interest. if her skin is cold, offer a blanket. if you think she's hungry, offer cereal. and if she looks sleepy you can offer her somewhere to lay down. even just showing her a picture of what you're talking about can help! 💕

I appreciate all this info thank you so much!
