I know the hb of 103 is low but not too bad at 35 weeks pregnant, however 5 for ferritin is considerably low.
Triage have confirmed I'll just be given iron tablets on Wednesday and that I dont meet the threshold for a quicker supplement I.e. IV iron.
I had bloods a month ago and I was borderline, get more bloods last week and now low.
I dont think iron tablets are going to increase my levels enough in time for birth and im worrying about my baby having potentially low iron for most of the 3rd tri.
Anyone else in the same boat? What has your healthcare provider done for you?

I was in the similar situation although they caught it a bit earlier (32 weeks) but my iron was quite high and ferritin at 7, I was also feeling completely fine and full of energy, so it’s not like there was any indication that something was wrong. And yeah my doctor just put me on iron tablets so have been taking those since, haven’t checked my ferritin again (36 weeks today) so wouldn’t know if it’s improving at all, but usually it came take a few months so not really counting on that.

I dont understand it, if the tablets will take too long to actually help in the pregnancy then why dont we get given the iv iron. At least that would potentially stop the likes of a blood transfusion in birth.
At least im not alone in this 😕

They’re being crappy to you, keep pushing. My Ferritin was 17 and HB 120 and I got an infusion at my hospital a fortnight ago. I don’t tolerate oral iron, and I said I’ve received one in my last four pregnancies.

The consultant said I didn’t meet the threshold for an infusion but I said I am a heavy bleeder after birth and will be breastfeeding exclusively and he gave in.

Thanks @Melanie ill push this tomorrow with my dr then and hope for a good outcome

I’ve been on iron tablets for 4 months, had a repeat blood test the other day and it’s gone up by 5 🤦🏼♀️ they have said to continue iron tablets for now but might need a transfusion closer to birth

Eat a lot of spinach to boost up your iron

My ferritin has dropped down to 12 even being on iron tablets. I’m 34 weeks. Should I push for an iron transfusion before delivery? I haemorrhaged during my last c section and had to spend the day on the high dependency ward.

Ask for a transfusion! MH results were slightly lower than yours and I had 2 transfusions and I still need tablets! In my experience, I really needed the boost from the transfusions then the iron tablets are now making me almost iron sufficient. Definitely ask!

I’m 33 weeks with ferritin of 5 too, results from my 28 week bloods but no one told me till 33 weeks 🙄 I’ve only been prescribed iron tables x

I had to ask for the numbers. Wish I did when they said i was borderline a month ago.
It seems it depends on your local health provider as to what they do. I've asked my GP to get on the case and waiting for a call back.
I have a consultant appointment tomorrow as well on a separate issue. So ill raise it with them too if my GP didn't get any where.

I have just been told my hb is 109 and ferritin is 5 at 34weeks. I have been prescribed iron tablets just couple of days ago. Im soo stressed!!!! 😭
How did it all go for you in the end?
