Behaviour

Recently my 3 year olds behaviour has become horrendous at bedtimes to the point where he’s hitting, scratching and pinching me. Whatever I say doesn’t phase him and it’s a constant battle. Tonight I’m in tears trying to get him to sleep as I don’t know what to do to stop this behaviour. He has also began saying things like I will hurt you and I have no idea where he’s got these words from as we don’t say anything like this at home 😢it’s heartbreaking, any advice greatly appreciated!

No advice unfortunately😔 we’re going through the same thing with our little boy. Every thing is a constant battle and is only happy when getting his own way.. we weren’t sure whether it was because of his sister coming along (she’s now 10 weeks) but I spoke to his nursery and they said most of the pre-schoolers are going through the same behaviour.. they said it’s because they can sense a change coming, which would be starting school in September and it’s a huge transition for them!
You’re not alone💓

I heard they're likely looking for a reaction, so the calmer your response the better....easier said than done tho! X

felt this, had a lovely white wine tonight after a chaotic three year old plus an overtired, over hot 11 week old 🤣 xxx

my 3yo isn’t so bad with bedtime, but most things during the day are a battle. it’s tough, he was always such an angel until he reached 3 and that’s when he changed, he started boundary pushing, he became more rude and argumentative and i was like what has happened to my angel!! but im sure it’s normal for this age and (hopefully) just a phase!! 🤣 xxx

remember to stay firm and stick to your guns. what you say goes, and don’t give in to him else he will continue to do whatever it is as he knows he will get away with it. let it be known that he can not hurt you under any circumstances, walk away if you have to, place him in bed and leave, say no bedtime story tonight (if that’s what you do). our son has never said he will hurt us, but he can say hurtful things. it used to just be “you’re not my best friend” when he was mad, but then when we’d make up he’d go “can we be best friends again?” however, the other day he made my partner very said when my partner told him he couldn’t do something, and my 3yo turned around and said “i don’t love you.” my partner can be a little sensitive (god love him) and got really hurt by this. i reassured my partner that he didn’t mean it, but i also had VERY stern words to my little boy and explained to him 1/

“that really hurt daddies feelings. if someone does something to upset us, that does not mean we can use our words to hurt others. you’re allowed to feel upset and angry about something, but you’re not allowed to hurt others. how would you feel if someone said mean words to you?” he said “sad” and i said “exactly, you would feel sad because it isn’t kind. so please don’t ever say that again.” the next morning, my 3yo was all over his daddy with cuddles and i love yous etc, more than usual so i actually think what i said went in xxx

So glad to hear I’m not alone! yes it’s usually mostly that he isn’t our best friend and I know he doesn’t mean it but it’s still upsetting to hear. He does have quite a bit of screen time as I also have a 5m old so I’m definitely going to limit this and thinking of starting a reward chart to see if this improves things. Thanks for all the comments x

i’m awful with letting mine have screen time, i let him have unlimited for far too long and even more so when i had his brother 11 weeks ago! we do what we can to survive. i’m starting to limit now. i originally intended to cut it completely, but he really struggled with that and would have melt downs (as if going through withdrawal) so now ive decided he’s allowed tv time once a day after dinner, we usually have dinner at 5/5:30 and i start getting boys ready for bed at 6:30, so it’ll only be a short period of tv compared to the entire day and it’s also a wind down activity for before bed. nobodies a perfect parent and we’re all our here trying our best for our babies ❤️ it’ll be easier once they start school! Xx

Yes anything for a bit of peace and calmness at times, mine wants to watch it at almost every meal time but if we’re outdoors for the day he’s absolutely fine, just got to try and keep him busy but hard when you’re so tired too, I can imagine he will be a little angel at school as he is for other family members 😂xx
