Hair knots

Help! My 22 month old plays with her hair to fall asleep, it's not been a huge problem as she didn't really grow hair until January but since then the knots are getting worse and worse and more frequent. Are there any tips or tricks to stop her? Her hair isn't very long but I've already had to cut a few chunks out where I couldn't get the knot out. Any advice would be really appreciated! X

Could you braid it in like Dutch or French braids to get it out of the way and to prevent tangles?

Or maybe try a stuffy that she can play with to go to sleep. My daughter has a stuffed cow that has fake hair and she likes stroking that when going to sleep.
