Jaundice

Hello! Both of mine (nearly 2 and 12 days old) have been jaundiced. The jaundice makes them super sleepy so they don't eat as much and therefore lose the weight (mine lost 7%). If you can set alarms every few hours to wake them to get them to eat more (just until they regain their weight) then that flushes the jaundice out (the more poop the better). My first kept being tested with the little light gun and we were sent to hospital to get heel pricked like 5 times in the first 2 weeks and he kept being just under the limit and we'd get sent home. Was very frustrating to have to keep jabbing him but they need to make sure that the jaundice isn't getting worse and the heel prick is more accurate. Don't feel awful there's nothing that could have prevented the jaundice and getting as much feeding in as possible as well as the indirect sunlight is all we can do. Xx

thank you so much for this. She has been going 4 hours for feeds so bringing this down to 3 hours and explains the sleepiness in her as well as her wake window is just so small xx

Hi! My third boy under four was born on 20th and he is my third to have it a little bit , please try not to worry, if she’s only just at that threshold then she’s still healthy and you don’t need to worry about turning anything around and they’ll put a treatment plan should she need it tomorrow :) with my first and this baby our treatment plan was simply sit and wait for it to resolve on its own :) with my second we needed light therapy too but not much and only two sessions :)

Hi Claire, my daughter was born on the 19th and has had jundice too! They said to me after two blood results that she is under the treatment threshold so to keep an eye on if she goes sleepy again and as long as she is feeding and wetting regularly it will leave her system after around 10 days. X

Morning, My little girl has jaundice but only mild in her eyes. We went to the hospital where they took blood to investigate further they did mention that because I’m solely breastfeeding there is a possibility that she could have jaundice caused by breastfeeding. I’m not overly worried because she super alert, she’s weeing and pooing fine. I’m sure you’re little girl will be fine

Thank you everyone … daddy has just gone taking her for a little walk around the block before we set up to sit in the garden for the day ready for her next blood test at some point today. Xx

Same happened with my boy. We are getting another check at 21 days because the blood tests keep clotting. His levels have been below the threshold so the plan was to keep him in the light and feed him as much as possible to help flush it.
