Low iron

Hey mums! Anyone suspected low iron in their 2-3 year olds? What symptoms and what did you do? Nearly 3 year old has woken up looking very pale and pale lips and a little bit more fatigued then normal but that’s not overly rare for her only day not at daycare.

You'll need a blood test for that one, but you could get a multivitamin with iron as an ingredient and wouldn't hurt if you'd rather avoid a blood test.

Could just be abit under the weather. I'd monitor for a while before bringing it up with a doctor.

My 2 year old was recently diagnosed with low iron and low vitamin d through a blood test.
He was very fatigued, low appetite and very irritable but without being sick.
Took him to the doctor to get it checked out and the doctor recommenced the blood test to find out what was wrong as it could have been another metabolic issue causing the symptoms.

Have started him on supplements and introduced meat into diet as originally follieing vegetarian diet

The symptoms you’ve described can be consistent with iron deficiency, as well as other things. It would probably be good to mention these to the gp and arrange a blood test? Have you noticed more susceptibility to the cold? Does your child still drink cows milk ?

If there is low iron make sure to avoid dairy when they take the iron supplement or iron rice meal!

Is your daughter having cravings for non-nutritive substances like ice or dirt? Trying to eat non food items is a solid sign. But yes I would get a blood test to confirm and if so see a dietitian for support so they can give a supplement that’s gentle - and make the correct recommendations (e.g. taking iron away from milk/calcium)
