Being nasty to pets

I’m a bit concerned about how my little boy behaves with the cat.

He chases her frequently, says how he is going to tell her off (we only have to shout her down from the kitchen sides but otherwise she’s well behaved) and more worryingly, today I walked in to him with his foot on her back pressing down- not stamping but pushing her down. She has tolerated quite a lot and runs away but she does have it in her to swipe if pushed and the way he’s treating her, I think it would be a fair response!!

I say how we need to be nice to her, she doesn’t need telling off etc, model saying sorry and stroking her to show we love her… I’m not sure what else to do to help him understand it’s wrong.

We have a book called cat chat helps explain how cats are feeling and I saw in our library there are books for children/toddlers on pet care,

We use the term kind hands with out toddler and cat as it’s what they use at nursery she’s mostly to loving to him trying to hug him but she is obsessed with his tail and can grab it/pull it to much and have to remind her Ernie is sleeping/resting or if he’s in crazy cat mode he’s feeling “wild” so you need to give him space. She does tell him off but only telling him not hitting or anything. He is the most tolerant cat and mostly me and my husband get the fallout out from a hacked off cat but he has swiped her a few times and we say Ernie’s told you to leave him alone and you havnt listened this is his way of telling you.

My boy is the same with our cat, only our cat won’t tolerate my boy for him to get anywhere near him so he’s got inventive about it and will throw his football at the cat or splash water on him 🤦🏻‍♀️ we keep explaining that the cat doesn’t like it but that seems to make him laugh, think it’s a phase we’re in and just waiting it out
