1 - the incessant rhyming
2 - nonsensical / incoherent storylines
3 - words that have no business being in a book for that age group (& that you're too tired to explain)
4 - weird grammar / sentence structures that make it hard to read

Oh my god, I thought I was delirious tonight reading my girls book. It had too many big words that didnāt fit in the book to begin with!! š¤£

We have āon the farmā by axel sheffler and it just doesnāt read well to me. I feel like Iām talking like a robot!! I was a nursery assistant for 12 years and I HATE that book!! But my two year old loves it š©
Also- thereās a book I read a while ago - I canāt remember what itās called - but one character called another character āstupidā. I refused to say it. I just think itās so nasty!
Another variation of the vocab option. I donāt have the time for nasty words especially in childrenās books.

Iāll be honest with you - I think axel sheffler needs to stay as an illustrator and not a writer. Iām not a fan of his works. I donāt find the rhymes or stories any fun. We have several of his books.

absolutely agree. My daughter loves the farm and we found it in a charity shop so I thought āgreat!ā. Biiiig regret š¤£

ššš my son never took to that one- think I dodged a bullet!!

lol I love the incessant rhyming and big words and nonsensical storylines. I hate the Childrenās books by jimmy fallon tho. The worst.

As a huge Dr. Seuss fan I love rhyming and nonsensical words lol.
I do hate when the story is too wordy and long, my children find the story boring.

The rhyming is good for their language development!

lol some of this is very intentional and important for kidsā books! Rhyming and vocabulary especially.
If the storyline is incoherent then thatās just not a great book, obviously. But there are soooo many amazing childrenās books! I canāt think of any with weird structure Iāve found hard to read.

Rhyming is really good for speech development, so Iām all for it!

My son loves non fiction lift the flap books. There's just way too much info in them and they send me to sleep reading them. I love rhyming story books as these are the most enjoyable for me to read. I like reading Julia Donaldson books but it's annoying that the rhymes don't work in my (non posh) accent and so I have to change my accent or the words to make it work š

I find the Bluey books really hard to follow. They seem to be written exactly like the cartoon & the story just doesn't flow. The characters doing pretend play is hard to follow when written on paper in a story book.
