Klonopin During Pregnancy

Hi mamas, I could really use some advice and support. I’ve been taking Klonopin for anxiety since 2022. I started at .50 and have slowly tapered down to a low dose. Even with the lower dose, I’m still struggling with an overwhelming amount of anxiety, and it’s been really hard to cope. I’ve heard such mixed things about taking it during pregnancy, and I feel so lost and alone in this. Has anyone else gone through this or have any thoughts or experiences they’d be willing to share? Thank you in advance.

No drugs are ideal in pregnancy although some have more risks than others obviously. Klonopin is Clonazepam, a benzodiazepine drug. These are respiratory suppresssnts. High dose in later pregnancy are associated with neonatal withdrawal, potential respiratory/breathing suppression and they can cause hypotonia (reduced muscle tine and hypothermia (low temp) in baby.

In an ideal world, it would be preferable not to take them. I'm a doctor. However, I wouldn't advise you suddenly stop them; I would advise you to speak with your own doctor about the best and safest way to proceed.

I'm so sorry to hear your anxiety is bad. Is there anything you can do to calm your anxiety - yoga, gentle massage, acupuncture, gentle walk, meditation, sharing with people.

They might all sound obvious but they can work without the need for drugs.

Good luck!

I absolutely would not take it during pregnancy. Anything where you cannot get it easily prescribed is a red flag for pregnancy imo. I see that you've been weaning. Have you asked for something safe during pregnancy that can treat your symptoms?

Unless it’s prescribed for seizures I really would not risk it.

In my experience getting put on Zofran for severe morning sickness did help out a lot with my anxiety during pregnancy, but a lot of my anxiety is directly tied to emetophobia / hating feeling sick
