Is it better for a babies development to preload puree/food on a spoon and give to the baby or spoon feed them?
I’m sure I read that letting them use the spoon may make them more independent eaters, as I try to put the spoon in my babies mouth he takes the handle off me so I often let him use it. Sometimes he chews it a bit but the food goes in and then I take it off him and add more food, and continue repeating.
My mother in law saw me doing this and said it looked messy, how it must take too long and he needs to get used to ‘taking from the spoon’. But surely it’s better to get used to using the spoon themselves as that’s the end goal?! Thoughts?

Independence and fun!
Absolutely doing the right thing.
Also food under 1 is just for fun and is supposed to be an experience of textures, flavored and learning. How can they learn if you do everything for them?
Babies are messy! 🤣

We do a combination but mainly preload and hand over, definitely better for independence in the long run! Old school weaning was all about filling baby up which often leads to over feeding. As for mess, she’s not the one who has to clean it up so she doesn’t get a say 🥲

I saw someone say the messier they are younger, the tidier they are as they get older. Or words to that effect. We let our baby feed herself where she could and I feel like it worked as my toddler can eat out without a bib without making a mess (or much of one) and sometimes I drop more food down me than she has!
Also if she’s not cleaning up or doing it, not her business!

You’re doing just perfect mama!!! I got the exact same comments about how messy it is and wouldn’t it be quicker to feed her myself. I used to just leave her to it - some days it would take over an hour but she had fun and she would eat as much as she wanted. (She was still drinking milk then so I wasn’t worried about her getting hungry). NOW I get compliments about how independent she is and she eats so nicely

Unless your MIL is the one being tasked with post-meal clean up, she can keep her trash opinions to herself. Pre-loaded spoons is a GREAT way to teach self-feeding skills. Ignore her. You're doing great!

Messy is ok! Baby is learning how to eat and about texture. My little guy has been mostly feeding himself pre loaded spoons from the start.

I’ve been doing both and seems to be working ok
