Sippy cup transition

I didn't realize that you were supposed to start introducing sippy cups at 6 months 🫣. My LO is 11 months and we're just starting. Does anyone have any tips and tricks to help with the transition from bottle to sippy cup? TIA šŸ¤

Does baby have teeth? If so, skip it and go to the Dr. Bonners straw cups.

I had a can of water he kept trying to get, so I put a straw in it and he drank, it surprised him and he couldn't do it again. Took weeks to get him to drink from a straw after that. Now Everytime he sees a straw he tries to steal my drink. As for a normal sippy cup, I just gave it to him one day and he started drinking. He prefers straws. He's 9m

I personally due to research would skip sippy and go straight to straw cups! We introduced a little late to our son as well around 9 months we put a little yogurt on the end of the straw and he got the idea almost immediately! Now he steals my cups and drinks from them šŸ˜‚

We introduced a straw cup to my son recently, he’s 8 months, we used the first years brand straw cups. We just would squeeze the cup to push water out of the straw and he learned to suck that way. Got it down immediately and now will drink out of any cup with a straw. We’re also trying for open cups- we just fill it all the way to the brim to her can just suck like that for now and then we tilt it a little when he gets water out. He does pretty good but it’s more mess haha. Good luck!

Do it based on your baby’s development.. my son didn’t take to his cup until closer to 9 months. I felt no stress or pressure.. however my goal was to have him off the bottle before 12 mos.

I didn't...I did open cup at 6 months and then straw at around 10 months and had no issues with anything šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

We also went straight to a silicone straw cup. It took a little consistency with holding it and trying, but he caught on pretty quickly.

we didn’t introduce sippies or straw cups until my son was a year old and it was never a problem. he took to it really quickly and never missed the bottle

I pretty much skipped the sippy cup stage lol my almost 7month old drinks from a straw, when goi want to transition to a straw they have a bottle that looks like the honey bear bottles and it allows you to help teach them by you squeezing the bottle and it puts a little in their mouth so they under the concept of a straw

My son really wasn’t getting the hang of it but when I drank from his sippy cup he copied me and that’s how he learned x

Some tips we got from a speech and language specialist (they work with safe swallowing) were to begin with free flowing sippy cups, if you want to use them. Open cups are always good, too. (Be prepared for spilling!) straws come next, and best to start again with free flowing before introducing a thing that’s leak-proof and requires different muscle engagement. For introducing straws, a recommended way is to take some water into the straw by sealing the top with your finger and offer the end with water to baby to show how it works. You’ll probably find they pick it up very quickly after that.
