I am giving birth in a few weeks to my first baby, and I am concerned about where they place the IV during labor? I’ve only every had an IV placed in the inner elbow area, I know there are probably other things I should be worried about but I can’t explain it, the idea of being restricted to not bending my arm fully while giving birth makes me feel very anxious, I feel like it is very important to me to be able to have free movement to bend my arms fully to comfort myself while giving birth. Let me know your thoughts please

When I had an IV for Pitocin with my first and for antibiotics with my second, they put the IV in my hand. Not sure on your birth plan, but with my third, I didn’t need an IV at all.

I had it on the top of my hand during all 3 of my deliveries. It was kind of annoying but easy to deal with compared to anywhere else. It’s usually where the best vein is and least intrusive to movements

Mine have always been placed in my hand.
You can always call your hospital and ask what their standard procedure is. Or even call your OB.

You can absolutely request them do it else where to give you what you prefer ! Make it a conversation before if possible and stick to your wants and needs during and make sure your partner of whomever is there to support you knows where you’d like it and can advocate for you wants//needs. But always remember it doesn’t always go exactly how we’d like and that’s ok also

Your medical staff will make that decision. Neither my primary nor secondary IV ports were placed anywhere that bends or is uncomfortably taught, neither inner elbow nor hands, but my forearms.

You can ask them to put it elsewhere

They put the IV in your hand during birth in case you have to have an emergency C section. I had to have two IVs during birth and it honestly wasn’t that bad
