I am a new military wife- my husband is currently at basic training. We now live in Illinois and have 2 children, a 1 year old and a 1 month old. After his BT he will have 36 weeks of AIT in Virginia(Fort Lee). Does anyone from there or know about how living on base works? We have been told different things and have gone back and forth about whether we can live on base with him or not or where to go. My children and I can’t stay where we’re living now for too much longer and we’re struggling a bit financially especially with the government shut down and complications with state benefits like SNAP/WIC. So I’m trying to figure out if I should try and find an apartment around where we are now or try to live on base or try to get a place off base but near??
For a little context I have few family near me now but my aunt and uncle who sometimes help with our kids but I’m still by myself; or go to a new state with zero help, new neighborhood, new city, new everything that I’m not familiar with.
I’m just freaking out being overwhelmed and scared doing all of this alone. I knew going into it we would have to be apart at times but financially I don’t know how to do this the best way.

As long as you’re married, you can live on beta team you will apply for base Housing as soon as he gets his duty station and his orders typically you’ll need a copy of orders and his most recent LS and then you get put on a waitlist. it depends on what base basis like JBLM are booked out for like two or three months. We’re at Leavenworth. Ours was only booked out for like two weeks after that you’ll move on base. We did a PPM move where we moved ourselves and then the army is reimbursing us now you cannot live with him AIT unless his AIT is over I think it’s 20 weeks typically AIT is very short in the communication greatly increases, but he still not allowed to live with you AIT nor are you allowed to visit with him. Snap you most likely won’t qualify for because they count your BAH as income however, Wic, you will be able to qualify for.
