Birth experiences

Hi all, I'm due to give birth in February FTM. I've been trying to decide which hospital to go to and thinking of Wrexham Maelor. Would anyone mind sharing their experiences? Xx

Hi Danielle, I haven’t given birth there recently - it was 3 years ago but I found staff attentive and post natally there seemed to be a lot of support staff around to assist with breast feeding technique and to help those who had c sections. I gave birth in a very clinical room due to some complications but there were two rooms with birthing pools in which looked very spacious and comfortable which I would have ideally liked to have been in! I’m pregnant again and plan to give birth again there so I suppose that also says a lot! X

I had a positive water pool birth at Wrexham Maelor 3 years ago

I had all my babies at Wrexham, one natural 6 years ago and the water birth suite was lovely (even though I didn’t make it into the bath as she came too quick) the room was nice, tea making facilities, a couch, not a proper hospital bed so felt a little more relaxed, lights were dimmed and had cute fairy lights.

With the twins I had an elected c section which I felt very well looked after and informed.

Stayed in around 3 days post birth with both deliveries and they staff were very helpful especially with the twins obviously having two babies was totally new to me so they would help me feed the other baby in the night etc x

Thank you Sophie, the water birth suite sounds lovely from how you've described it, as does your elective c section. Really nice to hear it went well for you especially with twins I hope the recovery has been ok too x

I was induced at Maelor in May last year. It was a mostly positive experience, though I did feel a bit..neglected, I guess, the night after my waters broke. However before that, and once I went to the labour room, it was a good experience and I felt relaxed and looked after. I ended up with a c-section and everything was calm, I felt fully informed throughout and baby came out safely, happy and healthy 😌 I wouldn't say the aftercare was amazing but it wasn't bad per se, overall it was an okay experience and if I wasn't one and done, I'd probably choose Maelor again 😊

Oh Lauren sounds a bit of a rollercoaster for you. I hate that you had some negatives but so glad some of it was positive for you. Hope your recovery was ok as it can be after all that and really reassuring to hear you would go back. Thank you for sharing Xx

I gave birth at Wrexham in May, having swapped from Chester at 36 weeks. Couldn’t have wished for a better experience. Felt listened to and empowered the whole time. All of the staff that I met were lovely and although I ended up giving birth in a random side room, and not on MLU or labour ward, they dealt with the situation brilliantly and never made me feel panicked xx

Thank you for sharing @Tabby due you mind sharing why you had to be in the side room. Was this down to their capacity? Sounds like a great experience to be empowered ❤️❤️

Sorry another question from me. Does anyone know if Wrexham rent breast pumps so you can try it out before you commit to buying ? I've heard some hospitals have this so might try this out if it's available xx

I gave birth in the Maelor just under 2 weeks ago and they were amazing. I cannot thank the staff in Blairbell, Midwifery Led Unit and Lawson Tait enough. All the midwives and doctors I dealt with were so lovely. Plus after giving birth the Breastfeeding team were so supportive. 🥰 I had a water birth in the Midwifery Led Unit and the room was very relaxing, dim lights, Bluetooth speaker, galaxy projector on ceiling etc. 💖

That sounds so lovely hope you're recovering ok. I had to go to Blairbell last week and the staff were fantastic. Your water birth sounds so lovely xx

We had our baby girl in December. We were induced and overall I'd say we had a fantastic experience. The majority of staff were incredible, and enabled me to feel empowered and in control. I had full confidence in them.

I only came across one nurse, who wasn't the most efficient compared to the rest and as someone mentioned in this chat, she felt neglected, as did I. She wasn't horrible but she wasn't helpful either.
When the change of staff happened in the morning, I felt so lucky as the nurse was brilliant and couldn't do enough to support. I guess you always get a mixture of people no matter where you are. The labour ward were fantastic from the off and the Doctors were brilliant. Hope you choose somewhere right for you.
Good luck with your birth 🥰

Thanks so much that's so helpful. I've heard a few people say that it's dependent on staff. So happy for you on your new arrival hope all's going well xxx

I had my baby on the 5th of Jan in the midwife led unit and had the best experience even with a 15 hour labour/pushing time, had three sets of midwives due to the shift patterns including 1 with a wonderful student midwife, they were fantastic. I had to be monitored at one point and the Dr who came to look at the results was a bit rude/didn’t really acknowledge me but the midwives are totally on your side, they even looked after my husband and my Mum wonderfully, constantly made teas and coffees and even made sure we had something to eat. I was in the birthing suite with the pool and it was so wonderful! X

your experience sounds lovely apart from the lack of acknowledgement from the doctor. I hope you're feeling ok and enjoying your new baby ❤️

Hi all sorry another question as my birth is getting nearer. When you were leaving Wrexham, what did you find the easiest thing to do logistically. The front entrance can get quite hectic so wondering if there's a more convenient way to head out to the car. Any info much appreciated x

Avatar

Oh no I love a big balloon but that sounds like a massive juggling act on top of the wind too !! I wish they had a VIP exit 🤣 thanks so much for sharing your info. Hope mum life is treating you ok xx

Oh that's so nice to hear. I am on count down now and just want her here safe and healthy. Going to try and breast feed but who knows how things will go.

Induction experience

I just wanted to share my experience with being induced as I wasn’t sure what to expect and thought it may help others.

I opted for the foley balloon which was inserted at 8am Saturday morning, I had to stay in hospital due to hypertension and protein urine however usually you can just go home once this has been done. The insertion of the balloon was not painful, was slightly uncomfortable as there was slight pressure. I actually found having the cervix checked prior to be worse (again not painful at this point just uncomfortable) The balloon had little effect and after having it removed I was still only 1cm. Removal also was pain free and hardly even noticeable.

I then had my first dose of the gel and definitely noticed a difference, I started experiencing period like cramps almost immediately however they were light and manageable. After 6 hours I had another cervix check and although my cervix was soft it was still only 1cm and was only open at the front. I had another dose of the gel and felt an increase in pressure and more intense cramping where I now required pain relief (codeine). After another 6 hours I had another cervix check and I had now dilated to 2-3cm however was still quite difficult to get all the way through so a third gel was recommended which I agreed to.

Almost immediately I noticed the difference and was in considerable pain, I had paracetamol and codeine however the contractions had now become intense and a lot closer together (around 3 minutes apart). After a couple of hours I had my last cervix check and was 4cm and taken down to the Labour ward to have my waters broken and an epidural.

I had been in my room for approx 20minutes when my waters broke by themselves and I was now 10cm and actively pushing…. There was no time for the epidural and my beautiful girl arrived into the world within 2 minutes of pushing.

All in all I would say the cramps/contractions were manageable up until the third gel where it became pretty unbearable however it was for a very short time a gas and air helped take the edge off. The worst part about any of it was actually the later cervix checks where after stimulating the cervix my contractions were at their most painful.

If I had to be induced again I would skip the balloon and opt for the gels immediately as thy had a quicker effect and I would have been out a lot sooner if I had done this to begin with.

One more thing, I’ve never believed when people say “you forget the pain once they’re here” but I can honestly say this is true. It’s been 4 days and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

It’s my birthday tomorrow.

Ok so I am going to be 35 years young. I can’t believe how much this life has thrown at me but it’s okay I’m a survivor. I am truly blessed to be alive. 🥳🧁🎂 The only downside is I won’t be celebrating my birthday because my man can’t take me out. So many emotions right now.
