When is the right age to pierce your girls ears?

Hi girls :), I’m a mom of a 18 month old girl and I was wondering what the typical age is for piercing a girl’s ears. In my culture it’s done very early, which for me is quite early 🥹

My daughters were done at age 7 as a Xmas present however I would have liked to wait for a year as took a while for her to be confident changing them.

I wait until my daughter asked for them....she was about 7 I think

when she asks for it

I was actually just talking about this with some family members today. In both my family and my husband’s, ear piercings are usually done between three and six months, when the ear cartilage is still very soft and flexible. I don’t know the exact age when cartilage becomes less malleable, that’s just what I’ve always been told. That said, my little one is three months old, and I honestly can’t imagine piercing her ears right now without completely sobbing the whole time (me, not her 😂). I’m really interested to hear what others think and what ages they chose.

I don’t personally think any baby or toddler should get their ears pierced, it’s painful and unnecessary and they should be old enough to ask for it themselves. It’s not a cultural thing in my country though so my opinion might differ to yours :)

When she asks and is able to change the / clean them ect.

I didn't have mine done until 14 years when I was able to take myself into town to have them done 🤣 I have 4 girls aged 13, 5 and 2 year old twins. My 13 year old doesn't want them, my 5 year old is yet to ask and my twins are too young. I'm of the opinion that they don't need them, it's purely a fashion piece so wait until they can ask for them 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just my view as it's not cultural for us 😊

When she can ask for it

Around me all the reputable piercing places say they have to be atleast 4 to have them done but for me it’d be when she asked to have them done and can understand what it means so maybe around 6. I don’t think a baby or toddler should get them pierced there’s so much risk of infection and injury and the piercing being in the wrong placeas they grow, But it’s mostly all personal choice isn’t it if your happy to go have it done and feel you can keep on top of cleaning go for it I do think toddlers look cute with earrings in

I did my girl when she was 4 months

I got mine done when I was 6! For me, I was allowed to pick something fun to do after I had surgery and that’s what I picked to do!

If you waited until she asked, you could make a nice mummy/daughter day of it. If she’s a bit scared, you could get a piercing first to show her it’s not so bad. And she’d be able to pick out her jewellery and it’d be something she’s got autonomy over.

I agree with those saying when she can ask for it! I still remember getting mine done when I was 7/8 and getting to choose the earrings I wanted it was a special memory! I don’t agree with piercing baby’s ears ☺️

Avatar

I’d say wait until she request it and can clean them herself. Also, usually girls who get them early on have the piercing hole not place at the center of the ear lobe when they get older, which isn’t an ideal result

Avatar

When they ask my daughter never wanted hers done i had mine done at 12 and I regretted them i no longer have them pierced i havnt for a long time.

Avatar

For me I’m waiting until she’s older as I’m worried about pulling at ears or potential infections. My culture some usually do it quite early on too so I understand the confusion for you, just do what feels right for you and your child

Avatar

I wouldn’t say there’s a specific age to get them done, I had my sons done at the age of 1 I don’t agree with a new born having them done though

Avatar

To be honest it depends on you cos u re her parents
We got our girls own done between 4 months old and second baby at 6 weeks old

My daughter was 6 months

I had mine done when I was 3 months x

When she asks. I was 9 when I asked and we had a lovely mummy daughter day of it. We went for lunch and hot chocolates, got my ears done and chose nice jewellery then went to the cinema.

It was a big coming of age thing for me, I loved showing everyone at school and looking after them.

Didn’t hurt btw, but I would never use a piercing gun. I was done with a gun (it was the 90s) and my first two have cartilage damage. Used needles since and they are so much nicer and easier.

Won’t be until my daughter is old enough to consistently ask for it herself over a period of time. Watching her cry getting vaccines was bad enough I couldn’t put her through something unnecessary that’s going to cause her distress 😢

Avatar

I'm personally waiting until she asks me herself, my mum did the same with me and I got them done when I was 7 and I love them now, so much so I went on to do my second and third holes myself, I know crazy teenager 🫠😂

I plan to do what my mom did with both me and my sister. We got our ears pierced when we became a woman (our cycles started). I was maybe 11? Or 12? My sister was maybe 10? Or 11?

Everyone saying ‘when she can ask for it’ yeah cool but also it’s just not that deep.
I was under 1 when I had my ears pierced and I have no clue that it even happened and was fine lol.
I’ve got multiple piercings now and if shes not like me and didn’t want them down the line guess what… she can take them out!

Avatar

My first daughter was about 7 months when we did it. I’ll probably do it this time around 4 months. We go to a tattoo shop btw

Avatar

I did my girls ears when they were 5 months.

Avatar

I got my girls done when she was 3months

Avatar

I did it at 6 months but she kept pulling them out some how , tried again at age 5 her request but again she took them out , so now she can save up and decide when she wants to do it lol shits not cheap anymore
