So this might be a bit of a long one but I really need some advice on this because I’ve never been in this situation.
So it was my daughter’s birthday on Monday and we had a little day out seeing Santa, going out for dinner and having cake just with me, my partner and his mam and obviously my daughter. We didn’t do anything big as I was 37 weeks pregnant (37+5 now) so we didn’t see any of my partners other family members apart from in the evening when his cousin came through with her daughter (let’s call her T) and his auntie.
Fast forward to today it turns out that one of his other cousins daughter (let’s call her O) has hand foot and mouth disease and the T that we saw on Monday has been hanging out with her for the last 4-5 days every single day. And we are supposed to be going to a surprise 30th birthday meal next week on Tuesday where both of them will be and obviously it can take 7-10 days for the HFM spots to dry out.
Would I be in the wrong if me and my daughter didn’t go to this meal as I don’t want to catch it as I can give birth at any point (even though am due in January) and I don’t want my daughter to catch it again as then I’d have to keep her away from my newborn when they make an appearance but also baby could be born with it as well if I was to catch it.
Also how likely is it that my daughter will get HFM again from such a short interaction because I know you’re infectious 1-2 weeks before the spots come out and then until they start to dry and crust over.
My daughter is already under the weather with green snot.

Personally, in terms of seeing them again, I think youve got to do what feels right - without guilt. Having an ill child and a newborn is horrible!

I dont blame you. Also pretty unfair of them to come and see you without give you the full information and asking if youre ok with it, IMO

Personally I dont think I would stay away for that reason alone just because for example even in nursery there is no exclusion period as its so so contagious so she could end up even getting it off another child. But it sounds like you have a lot to contend with and adding another meal out at 38 weeks into the mix with the added anxiety of this, you would totally be within your rights to cancel!

My little girl just had HFM and it is very contagious, she caught it from her cousin. Honestly it is horrible seeing your little ones unwell and plus with you being pregnant I don’t think you should have to think twice about missing the meal or feeling guilty about it
