Hi everyone, I am 24 and having my first baby girl in May. I wanted to know if there was any other women out there who navigated the decision to have no hospital visitors straight after birth. I have brought this up with my parents and my mother in particular got very nasty and said how shes so disappointed in me and used emotional guilt tripping to make me feel bad, as well as comparing me to the experience she had with my brothers wife and her birth. I am aware I might change my mind at the time, but at the moment I want that time to bond with baby and my partner. Additionally I have said I am happy for visitors as soon as we arrive back home which would be 24/48 hours maximum after birth. Not sure what else I can do to explain my reasonings and wondered if anyone had any advice please?

You don’t have to explain yourself. Sounds harsh, but it’s true. This is your birth, your baby and your experience. For me I was out within 12 hours of having my baby so there would’ve been no point in anyone coming by anyway, I just wanted to go home and shower and get to know my baby. Stick to your guns if that’s what you want. If people are offended that’s their problem.
All the best with your labour my lovely! Xx

Your family, your baby, your choice. The end x

Regardless of other people’s choice, yours is your choice and it needs to be respected. It doesn’t need an explanation as to why you don’t want anyone there. Don’t give in and keep your foot down. Lines have to be drawn for this and particularly in the future when you have more decisions made regarding yourself and your baby xx

Don't let your mum emotionally manipulate you. If you don't hold your boundaries now it will be so much more difficult to do in future.
Giving birth and the immediate recovery is a very personal medical event and no one, not even your partner, has the right to be there without your consent.
Personally, I didn't want any visitors until almost a week after we came home. And I'm super close to my mum and sister and knew they would be bending over backwards to help out, rather than expecting to be hosted.
Good luck, it's really tough!

I had no visitors at the hospital and only my partners parents were called to visit as soon as we got home which was the next day, my mum I had at the hospital with me as she was one of my labour partners but that was my choice you choose what works for you. You are allowed to navigate this however works for you, people may moan or make comments but this is your experience. Naturally grandparents would love to meet the LO straight away but it’s okay for you to have that time to yourself. You’ve made it clear what you want and told them well in advance now it’s down to them to process how they feel about it but making nasty comments is not okay and I’m sorry that happened. Also after birth there’s so many processes/ checks that take place and my hospital didn’t allow more than one visitor at a time and visiting hours were limited so having visitors didn’t make sense as we were heading home anyway

Nope you are not being unreasonable at all. The only person I’m having there is my other half as my birthing partner then zero visitors. My mother in law has got really nasty about this but it’s what I want, even once baby is home we are making it strict that nobody is allowed to come and visit until at least 5 days or so, or if we say they can & I won’t be answering the door to them… you just have to figure out what you want and don’t let anyone guilt trip you in to it, only do things when you find yourself ready to accept people around you. The most important people are you and your baby with your partner figuring it all out together

With my 2nd baby I made the decision of no visitors besides my son (however my mum will have to bring him), I would just make it clear you’ll be healing after labour and the last thing you need or want is visitors who really are just there to past the baby pillar to post and you want to soak the baby bubble in. I would just let them know this is your hospital stay, your baby therefore your decision 🤷🏻♀️ I had no visitors for 7 days with my son and it was truly magical just being surrounded by those who I loved and supported me and my baby (I live at home so my situation was a little different)

Not only bonding time but also for your own recovery you’re starting your own family so everyone should respect that. Hormones are crazy too at least for me I felt very primitive like when people tell you not to touch or go near a mother and her newly born puppies or something. I asked for no visitors and people still showed up I hope they respect your decisions if they truly loved you they would understand I don’t think you need to explain yourself they’ll have plenty of time to see the baby whenever you’re ready to let them

For all my 4 kids I never had a visitor and I had spoke with my partner about it and he agree with me, we also waited a few weeks till we had family members visit. Even one will have a comment but at the end of the day it’s your baby and if you feel safe and comfortable by making them wait on visiting them they must respect.

You don’t have to explain anything, this is your time and your baby and nothing to do with anyone else sod their opinions they’ll get over it

I didn’t have any visitors after baby was born we were only there that day and went home in the evening and I was shattered I don’t think there would’ve been time for visitors with all the people checking on baby/ feeding support all that. I don’t regret it at all and no one ever really mentioned it. If I’d stayed longer I would’ve had my sister come see me but more to cheer me up

We had no visitors in the hospital apart from my partners brother as he worked at the hospital so he popped in to see his niece. We also didn’t tell anyone that we gave birth until 2 days later.
If you have no children that need to be looked after whilst you’re giving birth you don’t have to tell anyone that you have gone into labour at all x

The hospital I was in only allowed birthing partners in 2023 x

They’re the asshole here
You don’t have to explain anything. Just tell them how it is and it’s either like it or lump it. This is your little family now and whatever you say goes, start as you mean to go on and stand your ground. Don’t let them emotionally manipulate you and don’t people please to protect their feelings it’ll only make things harder for you as time goes on and baby girl gets older x
Tbh you can always not tell anyone when you’re in labour and when you’re home be like oh I had the baby 😆

I didn’t have any hospital visitors. I’m pretty sure everyone in my family was disappointed but nobody pushed me back on it. If I ever have another baby I will do the exact same thing. It was so wonderful to have 2 days of nobody but us with our baby. There are so many doctors and nurses in and out at the hospital Anyways that I couldn’t imagine trying to have anyone in. You’d never get to rest! .. best advice I can give is that this will not be the first time someone doesn’t agree with your choice as a mom, so stick to it. Don’t feel bad. In the long run your family will forget about this and just be so happy to meet your baby when you decide to let them! I’ve learned in my 15 months of being a mom that I know what works best for us and I (honestly) don’t care if it doesn’t work for others and most people understand my perspective and respect it once I voice it.

Had my son during the last year of covid so there were no visitors allowed. This time around I'm not allowing visitors in the hospital or after for a month or two. My bf says that his family will be disappointed and I told him he can tell them all that I said they can kiss my ass because nobody feelings fucking matter but mine and nobody has a right to my child but me so they can fuck off...for months he's been fighting me on it but just yesterday he was like okay amd realized I'm not changing my mind for anyone or any reason.

That’s ur most vulnerable point in life don’t feel guilty for choosing urself
