I have a nearly 15 month old who has been waking at night for 2+ hours each time. I need some help with what the possible cause could be. Some background - she can sleep independently and was sleep trained when she was 5 months old. Since then she has slept well, and slept through the night from 7/8 months old when she was eating well and stopped waking for a breast feed at night. From around 12/13 months sleep as been hit and miss. Mainly due to illness, getting her molars etc. About over a week ago I dropped her from two naps to one nap, thinking that could be the issue. We had two nights so her back to sleeping through but then the night wakes started back up. She does seem upset and sometimes during the day has been fussy with food and tugging her ears, so I’m wondering if another tooth is coming up. We’ve been giving her calpol before bedtime. But still, we are getting a wake up usually 4/5 hours after she goes to bed and sometimes another one another 3/4 hours after she goes back to sleep. She won’t settle without us during this period, wants to be held and usually then crashes out after 2 hours awake. It’s super tough as I’m back to work now as well. Her routine since we dropped the nap is wake at 7, nap at 12:15 and she’s usually up between 14:00-14:30. Bedtime at 19:00. I’m wondering whether this is too much sleep? Prior to this we had cut her first nap down to 10/15 mins finishing at 10/10:15ish. She’s been doing fine without the morning nap, maybe a tiny bit fussy with tiredness but she’s adjusted well. I’m wondering whether she’s getting too much overall day sleep which is causing the split nights but with all the time she is awake overnight I’m not sure what to do/what our next steps should be. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi there! At this age her schedule sounds appropriate but I would do closer to 5.5 hours from nap wake up to bedtime. If there’s not enough sleep pressure before bed that can cause some night wakings. Sometimes when there are night wakings (and the child can self settle) they can reinforced by too much parental intervention. Try to do check ins versus picking her up and taking her out of the crib as that usually makes her stay awake longer. Nap can be 2 hours but if you find the night wakings continue you could cap it to 1.5 hours. Since she just made the 2 to 1 nap transition I would try adding on awake time first.
Thanks, that’s very helpful. I think she’s teething which might be causing her to wake too, but we go in as she’s crying and then she’s awake for a while. I do try and put her down to self settle again but she cries and wants to be held.
